Very Important Installation Instructions!

Cinders requires a Java 1.4 runtime to execute. It has not been tested under any other Java runtime, and I doubt it will all work right. If you already have a Java runtime, please ensure that the environment variable JAVA_HOME points to the directory you installed the Java runtime into. If you don't know what I'm talking about, follow these instructions.

Steps for installing Java Runtime

1. Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html
2. Click the first download link, the one for Windows (US English Only).
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and accept their license agreement.
4. Click the link "Download j2re-1_4_0_01-windows-i586.exe". Save the file. It's about 9 megs worth.
5. Double click the file you just downloaded.
6. Click your way through the installer. Accept all the defaults.

Steps to install Cinders

1. Unzip cinders.zip to somewhere convenient, like your desktop.
2. You're done.

To run, go into the Cinders directory and double-click either run.bat or runwindow.bat. Run.bat runs Cinders in full-screen mode. I haven't tested this much so there's a chance it won't work properly, so runwindow runs the game in a more normal windowed mode. If you installed the Java Runtime into the default location, or if you have a JAVA_HOME variable set, you should see the game run.

Make.bat is the makefile. You don't need to do that.
Map.bat is related to the level-making utility. It dosen't work very well.

LIMITATIONS

There's only 5 levels, no powerups, no bonuses. Oh well. I hope to release an uprated version in a few days with some more of the cool stuff I originally envisioned.

In windowed mode, don't hit the maximize button. It'll do something silly.

There's an occasional delay the first time sounds are played. I thought I had worked around that but I guess not.

No run script provided for Unix. Sorry. To run the game by hand, go into the cinders directory and do a

java -classpath bin Main.

That oughta do it.
