An hour or so after the competition had launched I got the idea to make a game based off of something I used to play in the park. The end result is something board-game-esque. Everything has been made from scratch since then including the grid based set-up. The game is two-player and rightfully should be played on two different screens but for the ludum dare I decided I'd make it on one screen (Players will have to switch the screen between them.)
WARNING: Some screen resolutions mess up the game, I can confirm 1280x720 and above work.
Instructions are in the game but I'll copy/paste it below.
Instructions: At the beginning of the game Player 1 and Player 2 will each choose a password and then proceed to place their unconventional weapon on their half of the board.
Once the game begins it will alternate between Player 1 and Player 2. On your turn you will get to choose 1 of 3 options.
1. Venture onto the opposing teams side. If you choose this you will get to control a token and venture across the other half of the board. Before you venture out you will have the choice of two starting points. After that you can walk around anywhere until you either walk into a trap or choose to investigate a tile. If you walk into a trap the trap will be revealed to you in subsequent turns. If you investigate a spot that tile will be marked to show that you've investigated it. Be warned that investigated tiles can still have traps placed on them in future turns by your opponent.
2. Set a trap. If you choose to set a trap you can set a trap anywhere on your half of the board as long as it does not block access to your unconventional weapon from both of your opponents starting points.
3. Ask a question. If you choose this you will get to ask your opponent a question which they will then have to answer. The rules are simple: 1. You cannot lie to a question when asked. 2. You can not ask "What is your password". Good examples of questions include, "Is your password a person place or thing." "How many L's does your password have" "Is your password 'Aisha'". (Programming note: No this part is open and there's nothing codewise that can detect if they're lying but it's still against the rules. This game is based off a game I used to play on the playground where if you lied you'd get reputational consequences.)
To win the game you first have to uncover the location of your opponents unconventional weapon. Then travel to it with your token and enter the correct password in by pressing space and then typing it in.
