This game is a christmas management sim. As Kris Kringle, you're tired of the same ol' countries celebrating Christmas. It's time to spread christams cheer. To do so you will need to find new candy caves for raw resources, send elfs on dangerous missions, and put christmas spirit to work to develop new technologies.
The game did not get finished. I spent most of saturday night drinking, then encouraging teenagers to litter, followed by eating at a hospital cafeteria. Danielle was not willing to go without pay to see the masterpiece completed.
To see some hastily made screens, download the zip, unzip it to the desktop, and run the executables. Being hastily made, you may need to move a blank window out of the way to play with the guis. The special operations is the most fun. You must pick a country and a mission type, then deploy an elf. test queue advances the day.
The idea was to have a variety of ways to win. Have 90% of countries celebrate Christmas, buy a new management system (resource victory), or spread the Christmas cheer to North Korea by any means necessary. To meet the theme, you are growing Santa's empire. Additionally, a mouse has two buttons.
It was a good learning experience. I think there is the core of a game jame sized game in the elf ops system. I also learned the importance of unit testing if you are going to write a lot of code, as it saves time pinpointing programmer error.
Included are some hastily made tkinter dialogs (they aren't formatted or laid out) that show how some of the systems would have worked.
Countries had candy caves that provide raw candy, which you needed to find and exploit. If you exploit them too much, you will create candy pollution, which will make the host country unhappy with you. Countries had a specific quality of toy desired. When a country's approval rate reaches a threshold it starts making christmas spirit, which allows you to research. An unhappy (polluted, faied elf ops) could declare war on Christmas and dispatch teams to lower approval in other countries, or shut down your candy cave. Leaders could be swayed to celebrate Christmas.
Research modified various chances in the game. Propaganda lowered the risk of war, and increased christmas spirit, you could make better toys, sleigh tech makes your elf teams more cheerful (read deadly).
Elf ops allow manipulating approval and leaders directly. You can also attempt to counter other countries attempts to wage war on christmas. You used raw candy to fund missions and buy elf teams.
Ideally the game would be balanced around managing your resources.
