LD #35 Post Mortem – i drew this because i was bored

So the ratings are in! I’m super happy with these results, ESPECIALLY considering that this was my first Ludum Dare (or game jam in general) and really the first Unity game I’ve “finished.” Although, you can’t really call my game finished considering all the little issues with it (getting stuck on walls, not being able to transform sometimes, animation glitches, being able to fall out of the level and not having a restart button, etc.). Here’s how my game did:
These are all the individual categories, and in case you’re wondering, I tied for 39th place in the overall Jam rankings. I’m pretty stoked about that! Again, this is my first game jam, and I didn’t have as much time to work as I had hoped considering I was in D.C. for most of Saturday and had only one or two hours on Monday because of school and homework.
Although I didn’t expect to get numbers this high, I think that overall the relative scores of each category were predictable. I knew going in that my game didn’t have as much of the “fun” aspect to it as you would usually want in a game, and it relied more heavily on level design, sound, and aesthetics to make it enjoyable. But that’s okay because apparently the mood and all that was enough that people though it deserved to rank pretty high on the “Overall” category.
Theme-wise, I was a little disappointed and kinda had hoped for the theme to be “two colors,” but I actually came up with my idea pretty quickly. I just opened up Sketchbook and started doodling character ideas and within about 7 minutes I came up with some usable stuff that turned into my main character.
There were a few things that I wished I had had the time to implement, like zones where you can’t transform at all, or some more challenging levels with different varieties of enemies. But of course there wasn’t enough time and I kind of had to rush the level design in the end, resulting in a few of the last levels looking similar or having no purpose other than to move the “story” along.
Also, at the end of the game there was meant to be a live-action cutscene that I was going to draw animation frames on top of, but then I realized that it would take about 4 hours just to import the whole video into Sketchbook, so I decided to opt for a still image (>-_-)>
Lastly, if you’re still reading this, thanks for taking an interest in my work, and thanks for participating if you took part in the Ludum Dare this year. I really enjoyed it, and it was partially due to me being able to check the site every hour or two and see what everyone else was working on. It kept me going! I’ve seen some really cool games come out of this this time and I’ll definitely be participating again next time!
