How to start the game:

Java 1.7 must be installed and *on the path*. (Sorry...)

You can then click run.bat (on Windows) or type 'java -jar shapematch.jar' in a command shell within the unzipped directory (Windows / Mac / Linux).

Shapematch Beat Jam is my take on the Shape Shift theme.
Harder than Dark Souls, but practice makes perfect.

Please let the menu screen run for a while before you start playing!
I worked very hard on it :-)

Object of the game:

It is a combination of a rhytm game and a match game.
You control the center shape. Move the shape to the matching shapes along the edges. If you manage to hit the shape on the beat you increase the score multiplier.

Sound is highly recommended!

Controls:

Choose shape with buttons 1-2-3-4-5 (1=dot 2=line 3=triangle 4=square 5=star)
Choose color with buttons q-w-e-r-t or cycle with tab
Move shape with arrow keys <- ^ v ->

If you fail to match both shape or color you die.
Match shape or color for small score, shape AND color for larger score, and shape, color AND on the correct beat for megascore and increased multiplier.

Can you beat your own highscore?

Graphics: Inkscape + Gimp
Sounds: Sfxr + Audacity
Music: Music Maker Jam + Audacity
Programming: Java and LibGDX

Known bugs:

If a controller is connected you may experience bugs, please disconnect all controllers if you experience this. Sorry again!

Game instructions:

STRATEGY TIPS
- If you manage to match shape and color at the correct beat, you will rack up points quickly!
- If you have no multiplier to lose, it is sometimes better to just match either color or shape quickly to get the time bonus.

I came here so that no more kittens would have to suffer... And I stayed for the thumping soundtrack, the sweet CRT effect, and the strangely compulsive gameplay!

Okay, the kitten is safe... for now.

Thanks for your kind comments. :-)

I also came here to save the kitten. Always save the kitten.
Your game is nice too.

That was cool, liked the audio, really added to the atmosphere.

Nice entry!

Poor kitty </3

That's a really nice soundtrack, and a nice concept, albeit a hard to control one - too many shape/colour combinations for me, but it works!

Nice game! The bottom shape was a tad difficult to spot at times since the shapes in the UI were overlapping it. Other than that, really solid entry. :)

This was really good. I liked the music and the pattern matching was fun.

Liked the music. Unfortunately the instruction text in the beginning overlapped itself and was impossible to read on my machine.

Love the games music and visual style. I am much too slow for this game, but I like the idea behind it. Well done.

Cool little game. It was a bit "overwhelming" with the particles, however.

The throbbing of the light gave me a bit of a headache, but good otherwise.

Amazing music and challenging game, with having so many different keys to need to press

Great music! I opted for the "lesser points" version because I'm horrible with rhythm games.

It's quite hard and exciting, I like it!

I'm not sure if the 1-5 and Q-R keys are too many, but it do bring the challenge up, also the music is neat!

Good job :D

Thanks for the feedback, I'm considering making a post-compo 'easy' version with just 2 colors and 4 shapes. That would put more emphasis on the 'rhytm' part which I think would be good.

Very enjoyable game, though I ended up only matching shapes and not colors so as to win. The darkness that creeped in with the beat could've been toned down a bit, and occasionally it completely darkened the screen, but fortunately this never caused too much of a problem.

Also, the menu work shows! I stuck on the screen for a bit to see it and it was certainly worth watching. In the menu and out, the audio and effects really worked well!

@LukeZaz Thank you, I watched your stream, it was very nice seeing someone play the game and get their reactions.
