“To talk about a cross in the ancient world would be like talking today

about instruments of torture. Listen to some of the ways people in the

ancient world talked about crucifixion:

Punished with limbs outstretched, they see the stake as their fate;

they are fastened and nailed to it in the most bitter torment, evil

food for birds of prey and grim pickings for dogs.“

“Another Roman writer, Seneca, speaks of the variety of creative options

open to the sadistic executioner: “I see crosses there, not just of one kind

but made in many different ways: some have their victims with head down

to the ground; some impale their private parts; others stretch out their arms

on the gibbet.”

-Two sections from The Gospel and the Cross, by Craig Van Gelder published 1999.
