This is what I managed to come up with.

This represents the better half of 20 hours work, I just got too tired to finish what I started.

I hope to at least finished the core gameplay at some point.

As you mentioned, there isn't a whole lot here yet. But the style is visually appealing - I really liked the little guy's walk cycle, especially when moving side to side. Collected all the gems - would be fun to see where this ends up going.
