Snakes and Letters is a hardcore 1.5-player platformer in which you climb to the top of a pyramid to reach the tomb of your ancestors. Along the way there are three relics to collect.

Controls: Arrows to move, letters to make snake, space to remove snake.

Chrome works best, Firefox is choppy, IE does not work.
The Post-Compo has some fixes to make the controls tighter, slight performance optimization and "improved" level design.

Cool game, nice to play with two people, bit hard to play it alone. No fair warning for the laser pharaoh though ;)

I really liked the idea of creating platforms like that, though I spend seconds trying to find the keys while avoiding the enemies lol
The only thing that is kinda confusing is when you wanna remove a snake. Like, sometimes it doesn't work when pressing the letters. Maybe I was just doing it wrong. And yeah, the laser though, can barely see it xd
It's hardcore afterall, I guess.

@c4m: Indeed, for the red and black snakes you need to find some items first. Perhaps we'll put up a post-compo where we fix that.
@Josho: have you tried pressing space? Otherwise it may be a bug.

Great stuff! I wonder if it would be possible to remove the platformer controls, and control the entire game just by typing letters. Snakes to push the player forwards, conveyor belt snakes, trampoline snakes, shield snakes, the possibilities are endless!

Cute concept for a game. That second enemy, with the death balls must have killed me a dozen times, though. I couldn't get past that part

Nice idea with a 1.5 person game! We enjoyed playing with such an innovative mechanic, but the controls seemed a little off which made it quite hard at times. Otherwise fun!

@Dining Philosopher I know that I write many people the same comments, but I actually play those games! I don't just have time to write individual comments but I want to give feedback at the same time.
And basically Graphics and sound is what causes problems at game development.

I don't know why it is causing errors I am running the game at windows 7 aswell!

As some comments say it was tricky to play alone, but it is a good concept. I like this kind of games in which you can create platforms.

I think this is innovative, but a bit challenging. Especially when the keys changes every time you respawn/die. Music would create a better overall mood. The death sound effect is kind of funny.

very innovative idea to create your own platforms or shields, it's quite difficult though so I would have put the fire chalice a bit more frequently ;)
anyway very nice game
