Working the ERR

This game is from the old Ludum Dare platform. You can try viewing the original page on Web Archive

coolness: 0.10
Instructions
--------------------------
Various problems will arise on the ship, e.g. knocking sound coming from the engine. You need to walk around the engine and identify where exactly the problem is by examining each part with the USE key. Then you can take an item you found in the lockers and use it to fix the problem. In the case of the engine knock, if you have a hammer in your pocket, you can walk up to the noisy part of the engine and hit SPACE.

There are different kinds of problems there are fixed with different items with some overlap. Duct tape can fix several problems, for example.

Try and fix the problems and prevent the ship from exploding.

Working the ERR
---------------
You, Lt. Gordy LaBarge, are the sole crewman manning the engine room. Your rickety vessel is fleeing a collapsing star, but can you keep the engines running long enough to get to safety. Probably not.

About
-----
This is an HTML5 game made with the Phaser framework (http://phaser.io/). I created the sound and music using BFXR (http://www.bfxr.net/) and WolframTones (http://tones.wolfram.com/). I used Photoshop and Paint.Net for the graphics, and wrote all the code in Notepad++. Oh, and Tiled (http://www.mapeditor.org/) for creating the room layout.

Diary

I was initially really disappointed "One Room" was chosen for the theme. It sounded really boring. But it turned out to be more interesting than I expected. This is my first compo, and this "restrictive" theme helped me keep the game small scale enough to complete in 48 hours. Now that I've done completed it, I'll be able to manage\organize my time better for the next compo.

The game is probably too hard, and could use better hints\tutorials. You are not actually supposed to escape without the ship exploding - you're just supposed to see how far you can get. I'm not sure how clear that is, or if it's even initially obviously what you are supposed to be doing. I would have also like to add more interactive items in the room. Not necessarily gameplay related things, but just fun "toys" while you explore.

I ended up doing an HTML5 game, because I wanted a tiny build process (re: none) and I didn't want to worry about different builds for different platforms. I was already familiar with Phaser and it's a fairly well rounded framework.
