Ludum Dare 48h contest

This weekend (16-18 Apr) I'm participating in Ludum Dare 48h contest. The point is to make a complete game in 48 hours.

You can expect timelog, some screenshots and of course download here. : )

Download

Heh, I've forgotten about most important part:
Windows binary and source code is available!
I'm sorry I haven't put the link here earlier. :P

Screenshots

Here is first screenshot of my entry. : ) It's just OpenGL angine animating movement inside a vein.

Final screenshots. : )

Libs, Tools and others

Libraries and tools I'll be probably using during the contest:

  • Allegro - wonderful game programming library
  • AllegroGL - interface between Alegro and OpenGL
  • OpenGL - 3D library (if I decide to go 3D)
  • DUMB - module player with Allegro interface
  • MinGW - Windows gcc compiler
  • DevC++ - MinGW IDE
  • DJGPP - DOS gcc port (early work probably will be done there)
  • RHIDE - DJGPP IDE
  • MadTracker - module composing tool (suitable for recording sfx too)
  • Micrografx Picture Publisher - graphics editor
  • Discreet GMax - 3D editor (free 3D Studio with some parts removed)
  • Allegro/AllegroGL documentation (of course)
  • NeHe tutorial - great OpenGL tutorial (to be used as reference)

Probably I'll use something more (if I do, I'll update this section). Also some names on this list will be converted to links.

Time log

Here I'll be placing what I'm doing during the contest.
Time is measuerd from the beginning of the contest. Time in parentheses is my local time.

0:00 (3:00) - Contest starts, theme is INFECTION! I have no idea what to do, I'm going to get some sleep.

8:30 (11:30) - I have woken up, eaten breakfast and I'm going to do some coding. I have no idea what to write yet so I'm going to make isometric tile engine and some tile gfx.

10:30 (13:30) - I've finally decided what to do. I'll tell you when I'll have something done. : )

11:15 (14:15) - I've taken a break and composed some bits of music. Now I'm going out to eas something.

12:45 (15:45) - Back from the dinner, back to work.

14:00 (17:00) - Progress is slow. OBJ-like 3D model format loadre done.

16:00 (19:00) - I've made model rendering code (with shading) and created vein model in gmax. The only problem is exporting it since it has 4000 triangles (1572 after optimization, but i'd like to have full 4000). I'll try to guess how Plasma3D format is built as it's the only mesh exporting format I've installed in gmax (apart from Quake 3 MD3, but I had some troubles with it).

16:30 (19:30) - Managed to export model to MD3. Now I'm going to write a simple converter.

17:40 (20:40) - Converter is done and running. Vein loaded into engine looks quite cool. Lighting seems buggy.

19:45 (22:45) - I've finally managed to correct MD3 conversion code and achieved proper lighting. : )

22:45 (01:30) - Since last log I was doing: model morphing code, game map stuff, reading Ludum Dare IRC and looking at screenshots people posted there.

24:00 (3:00) - Competition is half way. I've done some very basic engine coding. Attached screenshot in screenshots section.

24:50 (3:50) - I've added music playback (these bits of music composed earliel). Awesome feeling! : )

26:30 (5:30) - Time to get some sleep.

33:10 (12:10) - Coding again.

34:55 (13:55) - I've made simple virus model and some object and physics handling code. Object removing routine seems buggy (crash!).

37:00 (16:00) - Objects are ok, menu system is done (but not filled with content yet). I've tried to make resoltuion change option in menu, but failed (crashes).

38:30 (17:30) - Killed a bug in object-world collision system, added new virus model, object-object collision system and virus spawning function. It starts to look like a game.

40:30 (19:30) - I'm goint to church.

42:30 (21:30) - Back to coding.

48:00 (3:00) - Completed! In last minutes.
