Only one day's left. We build our B machines...

More Ludum Dare programming stuff! Last update before sleep.

It's rough not being able to sample sounds from everything like I did for Tendrils. I actually made my own samples - the lead instrument in the game music is a synth sample that I made in notepad. Good old Notepad. I also recorded a metal measuring cup, half full of water, being tapped by a knife blade; it makes a good invulnerable-sounding noise for shots hitting armored critters.

The main trick to the gameplay is switching colors. Red to eat red viruses, green to eat green viruses, white to recover health. All the shooting is just a bonus.

I revamped the map system to use text files instead of pickled files. That way, I can leave some room features out of the editor, and still have an easy way to change them.

Everything moves at a pretty swift pace, even when 100 things are moving on the screen at once. On a low-end system, this would probably produce some processor slowdown...but there's a limit to how much complexity the eye can cope with on screen anyway! My graphics are very cheesy, but they have strong shape and color coding, so hopefully they are ugly but clear.

The ludum dare website appears to be down. Perhaps it will return soon.
