This was rough, but I made it with minutes to spare.. This is my third game ever made, I used GameMaker this time and was basically learning it as I went along. My third jam ever and, in fact, my first Ludum Dare. I'm new, and I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm having fun.
I made all the music, sounds and the graphic for the main character, and the parallax backgrounds in level 1. My friend Rob did the concept art of the enemies on paper, and I digitized/animated them.
The tiles and level 2 parallex backgrounds are from OpenGameArt, I don't have time to put credits yet..
Each sign has a fun fact about bears, so it's educational/platformer I guess.. Theme sucked, oh well.
You have to destroy Dr. Goo's mutated minions to learn about bears, because your a bear and you want to know more about your species..
Thanks @extrone! I think it's something I could improve on too, I consider it far from finished. I'm taking a break from jams for a little bit so I can sharpen my skills with GameMaker a bit, and just learn more about game developing in general, I'm pretty new to all this, but it is fun.
Definitely has that signature Zombie Virals feel I remember from the last game! I really like this game. The idea of combining platforming with education is a great fit for the theme, because not only is it an unexpected combination, but it actually works really well by framing knowledge as the reward for completing a challenge. You could make a pretty good children's game with this concept (just don't make a game for kids about, uhmm *cough* "bear" penis *cough*). My only gripe is that after Logic Gates of Hell, I was expecting a bigger finale, but instead, this game doesn't really go any further than the core gameplay. A big boss fight against a teddy bear or something would have been fun.
@david-boeger Thanks! I had originally planned on making this game bigger with a boss fight, but so much was going wrong during the weekend that I couldn't get to that, BUT this game will be patched after LD, along with my previous two now that I'm taking a break from jams. I didn't even have time for a proper jump animation, a proper sprite for ammo, health bar, points, timer, better sound, etc.., so many things I wanted to do but I blew so much time on making the game feel and look decent, lol.
@Jezzamon Sorry about that, I think I even screwed up on the link in general as well, it was last minute and things went all screwy. I'm also regretful I didn't make a Mac build, I had a free license with GameMaker, I tried going back and making a Mac build recently for my friend to play and it wouldn't even open my game since my license ran out :(
nice game man! I go tthe the end of the second level and got the to be continued message but i didnt notice it for a while hahaha so i tried to go back thinking i missed something lol.
I like all the different types of enemies. The Bees were really annoying because they are super fast.
a bear.....WITH A SHOTGUN! need i say more? lol. the bear character design is hilarious & i'm a sucker for 2d platforms. also learned sum nice facts about bears along the way to WIN/WIN! great stuff man! ^__^
