The batteries are to increase the range and brightness of the flashlight.

The narrow beam of the torch really added to the platforming, good job! I'd be interested to see how the game changed of you had to drop the flashlight to pick other objects up - I'd imagine it could make for some interesting puzzles/challenges.

Nice touch with the ending, too.
