Souliseum

Synopsis
After a tragic event you're casted out of the plane of existence you reside in, only for your soul to reappear in King Slime's coliseum with most of your memory wipped out. Faint images echo in your mind, reteaching you tricks from your earlier years, as horrid enemies get slowly close to your spectral appearance.
The moment you manage to materialize your signature cape and mask, King Slime's voice thunders through the arena. You're the latest lost soul to arrive to the battlefields of glory, the time to fight and regain your past life is here!

Setting
Souliseum is a short Action RPG combat game where you choose which spells to learn and how your character grows. Fight through waves of slimy monsters intent on gunking your progress.
After each battle, you will be able to choose a new spell to learn, or a stat upgrade to prepare you for the next battle.
Created by the __Madness Factory__ team for Ludum Dare 45

How to play
Fight through rounds of monsters to reach the boss. After each round you will be able to choose an upgrade, choose wisely and achieve glory!
As for the controls, it's an arcade game, it should be really easy to grasp. The increasing number of skills our heroine/hero can get makes things slightly more difficult, but nothing is out of reach.
Controls are only on keyboard, but it may change if development goes on after submission.
They go as follows:
- __Action ---------------------> Key__
- Move up -> Arrow up
- Move down -> Arrow down
- Move left -> Arrow left
- Move right -> Arrow right
- Soul Fist -> Q
- Soul Saber (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Sting (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Skewer (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Cleave (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Firefly (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Boomerang (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Bomb (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Pulse (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Blink (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Soul Shield (unlockable) -> Mappable to Q, W, A, E, S, D
- Pause / Menu -> ESC
The whole __mappeable__ thing means you will have to choose what skills you want for your run... So choose wisely! 🐶

Yeah, we didn't have someone who works with sounds / music this time so we did what we could with some simple sound effects made with bfxr. It would really improve the feeling with some added music on top, right?
We overscoped a little, as always in this kind of jams, there's like 2 types of enemies that didn't get through the implementation pass and some mechanics that one of the devs (myself, xD) broke at the last minute and it was a bit too late to fix them. We are nevertheless proud of what we managed to get out,
When I really enjoyed the mechanics of the boomerang.
@danielhamngren, @pietptr, @toxiccomputer Thanks for your comments too! As for spells, there's a total of 9, some offensive, some defensive. As for rounds, there's a total of 10 rounds, the last one being against King Slime (with some special mechanics for his slimy majesty). Hope someone gets to beat it!

I really like the different abilities and that you can only have a set amount! It makes it fun to have to decide which power up to choose.
A few times monsters spawned directly on top of me instantly doing damage, which felt a little unfair. And I would have liked to have seen a clear indication whether I had enough mana for a spell. From what I could tell they weren't greyed out or anything when mana was too low.
There were some art assets scaled differently from another. Some x2, some x3. From the look of the spell frames at the top, some even x3.5 or something like it? The player character also suffers from that. That's one of my major pet peeves that I always seem to run into.
But all in all, an enjoyable entry!
the only thing I missed was some way of recharging life/mana after each wave.
However, I think it suffers from having weak spells / a low mana regen: you should feel more powerful after getting a new spell, but all of them (except maybe the fireball) feel a bit underwhelming, having lower damage than your primary weapon or having high resource costs (mana, cooldown), forcing you to keep relying on the Spirit Fist...
