This is my first game jam submission ever. I wrote this in java using a game engine that I had previously written for another game. You start out as a seed and have to place roots to absorb water and fertilizer and grow your tree. Spend fertilizer to upgrade your environment!
This was written in java using LWJGL 3, slick util and java native libraries.
How - to - play You must go underground and construct a root system to collect water and fertilizer. After placing the first root you can build more roots by clicking on the nodes at the end of the roots and spending one fertilizer. Water will feed your tree as it grows and fertilizer is used to buy upgrades.

@sigod yeah I'm not sure what is wrong with it loading in the console. I have tried this myself and can't get it to run. But if you run it natively on the desktop it works.
@sigod I am sorry. I am unable to recreate the issue on my end. Everything seems to be working. It is working on my end, my recommendation right now would be to make sure that java is up to date on your computer and re-download the game file. I apologize for it giving you this much trouble.
@sigod I just did that to no avail. Everything still runs as it should. I also downloaded it from my online source to verify that the uploaded copy wasn't somehow corrupt. I have uploaded the source code in case you would want to run it from that.
@ausstein I don't know if you might have a different operating system. But I just uploaded the files it needs to run on linux and mac. Previously it would only run on windows.
@jakemchugh1 I think I clicked it before I was at the proper height, but then saw the upgrade requirements and got it to the proper specs before playing again. Even without pressing 3 and 4 :laughing:
Who knew that growing a tree would require such resource management? I manage to grow it to 123 meters and matured it into level 12. But at some point the water just goes away. And boy! Those bears can take some HUGE crap. I enjoyed the game much more than expected, thank you for this experience. Good job!
@ausstein@sigod@pierre-feuille-studio@jummit@mad-brokli Hey all, I believe I have fixed the issue. I can now run the game in the command line without any warnings. I had to reduce the sampling rate of the audio, so the audio quality is slightly less now. On another note the file is only 18mb now!
Unfortunately can't play on windows atm, but wanted to say the art here is really endearing and reminds me of some classic games I grew up with. Cheers!

@jakemchugh1 thanks for tagging, had a great time playing this game! Couple of ludums ago (the one themed "growth" I was planning to do something similar, but focused on sumlight consumption. Never finished though. Nice gameplay!
108m maturity 7 o/ Feel great, but I admit the first time I "went dormant" at only 20m :o . The first cm and the first meter are a bit slow to attain, but I was happy to add the bears to my tree(s) :p
Lol'd pretty hard. It is indeed a tree growing sim. Nice job with the scientific notation at the beginning too. Idk how I feel about the tree height pausing when you go back to tree view, but I can see how thatd be easier to program. Nice submission :)
Overall I had fun playing the game. I liked the concept, it was innovative and interesting. I don't remember a game about this matter, so it is always cool to play new things. The artwork was not amazing but it feets the purpose. My 1st suggestion would be to improve your UI next time, this will make the game look more polished. As it is right now it is merely functional and it doesn't anything to the table. Congratulations on your 1st jam game :).
Worked well on the first try for me ^^. Relaxing game were I ended looking at the numbers with the sound of the water. A few notes on a guitar would have been welcome !
This is really fun, at the end seeing how a bunch of small decisions lead to a beautiful complex network. None of the upgrades would work for me. This is a cool idea.
@hijomo did you have your tree at the proper height to get the upgrades? Others had complained saying that they couldn't upgrade and it turned out that their tree did not meet the requirements.
I've never played a tree simulator before, and it was an interesting experience. The slow start keeps you somewhat from replaying, but if I had more time I would probably give it another try. I liked the fertilizer sound - thumbs up for humor!
It's an interesting game, satisfying noise, your tree requires more stuff the bigger it gets, I just for whatever reason could not get my mouse up to the upgrades. My mouse collides with the upper 1/4 of the game as if it's the edge of the screen. Is this a design choice or a bug?
This is a pretty addicting game. I'd like to say, you probably want to explain how to play a little bit in the description, because trying it out for myself took too much time. Even that you have to click existing node before you can place a new one - I discovered this just by accident. Anyway, it's a nice little game, you did a good job, especially for your first time!
@fupi shoot. Well I designed the dimensions of everything in the game to run at 1280x960. So there may be an issue with the screen ratio that is causing that. I am so sorry that the full functioning game doesn't work for you.
Was more fun and easy to get into than I thought a tree simulator would be. Although upgrades also didn't work on me, I could see this game becoming a strategy game :D And yeah, great idea!
@atomfox0213 thank you for the feedback. It has to do with the screen dimensions. I am unable to fix that without starting over. I now know how to prevent it in future releases. I am sorry that you are unable to fully enjoy my game.
