How would you like to go on a spaceventure?

Play as 72H, an adventurer who's exploring the furthest reaches of deep space.

Your goal is to get as far as you can into the depths of space, balancing fuel and money, and researching ship improvements. And, of course, learning more about your surroundings with your trusty scanner, Gert.

Outer is a randomly-generated point-and-click sort of adventure, with lovingly handmade pixel art and lovingly mouth-created sound effects. It's made using Love2D.

Once you've played, share your score! I have literally no idea how high one can score.

Notes

The game was initially experiencing a small bug with the cursor hover code (as mentioned in the comments) but that should be fixed, and my hope is that you will be treated to a bug-free experience. :smiley_cat:

Update on below: the problem wasn't with my file, but with Catalina permissions. You'll need to make sure that you can open app files from anywhere in order to run the game, but the file does work!

~~I'm having lots of difficulty getting a mac .app file working, but I developed this on a mac so rest assured it's coming! In the meantime, mac users who have Love2D on their computers are welcome to use the .love file included on my itch.io page to play.~~

I really like the execution here. The game is quite fun and the humor is *on point*. I'd love the game to be a bit more punishing though. The addition of random events (such as "robbed by space pirates" or "fuel tank sprung a leak") would add some unpredictability and given the excellently written content that's already here, I can only imagine the awesome scenarios you'd think up!

@thatmanrobin That crash has been happening extremely rarely - I can't figure out why, so I can't debug it! How far into the game were you?

All and all though I love the art humor and the music.
Aside from some of the crashes it looks like a great little game.

Great looking and sounding game, with a lot of charm and humour in the writing of the text. I got the error mentioned before when running out of fuel I think, if that helps with debugging.

Hey @thatmanrobin @choppers @sonicpixelation thank you for the bug report. I made a very small bug fix that I think solved the problem - the code checking to change the cursor on hover was still trying to loop through the items once they weren't being rendered anymore, so it was attempting comparisons on nothing. Could you do me a huge favor and re-download from itch and let me know if you're still experiencing the error? I've poked around a lot and can't trigger it, so it *should* be good? And thank you for playing the game!

Cool game. Chill, relaxing, point-and-click, and try to get money and fuel to get to the end. I didn't make it, and quite terrible, but had fun trying. Thanks for the game!

Game is nice. It recalls Out of There: Omega Alliance. Graphics amazing! But music is awful. I turned it off :(

Pretty good across the board, all the little descriptions were pretty funny and I liked the music. It doesn't look like you fixed that bug though, I got to about the sixth galaxy and then had an error when going to the next.

@swordfish Thanks for letting me know. I knew the culprit code but thought I'd fixed it... I went ahead and just ripped out the code that added in the different cursor on hover, so if it's not fixed now, then I'll just throw my laptop out the window. :grin:

I couldn't open the web version, had to download the game. My first reaction was "OMG you made this in Love!? why would you do that to yourself?". That being said, it's fun little game, good job!

Loved this! Got more than a few laughs out of me, we definitely have similar senses of humour! The graphics were nice and polished too, and I think it said the font was also handmade which is impressive. I liked the lovingly mouth-created sound effects too, overall really enjoyed it, good job :)

Got stuck at about 48 points for a few runs then figured it out and beat it with 109 points! Funny, well implemented, and pretty addictive. Good music and sounds. Overall solid, good job!

I tried playing this in Firefox for Linux, but got an error (screen shot below).

But it works fine in Chrome. Probably it's just a fluke in the version of Firefox that I have. Anyway, I like this kind of game, and I had fun exploring. It would be nice to see some alien life forms (even if via primitive graphics), bu given the time constraints, you did a good job. Nice work.
