Heart of Atoms

by dmytro
Hello, this is my first Ludum Dare submission ever. Not a big fan of platformers, but, nevertheless, tried to make one.

DESCRIPTION:

You ended up in a nuclear power plant. The exit is on the other side, but you can't just run to it. The core is melting and can explode at any moment. The only thing you are left to do is to delay the catastrophe before you can escape.

CONTROLS:

A, D - walk, W/Space - jump, CTRL - fire

I really liked the graphics and the theme here. I found the platforming very difficult, however and I couldn't manage to beat the first level. I think that's ok if it's what you meant to do but it can quickly become frustrating. I don't have any easy answers as level design is hard, and I also make platformers that people sometimes say are too hard, but one thing I like to do is have the first non-tutorial segment be roughly 1/3 as hard as I can manage to pull off myself. Then gradually create segments or levels that are incrementally harder but save the "oh shit" jumps for the end (and realistically, nerf them too if you want anybody to finish it).

I've got to be brutally honest here. While the graphics and sound were great, I feel like the controls make this game not so great. Jumping feels fine, same with the shooting, but when in the air, you can't stop your forward speed. You end up over-shooting every obstacle and it makes precise platforming a nightmare. Jumping off of small platforms also felt like a coin flip whether I would even jump or not. This made jumping between buzzsaws extra nerve-wracking and I didn't even complete the game. I like everything else you have here, it's a good base. It just needs some refinement in the platforming and then I could see it being great.
