My first Ludum Dare, and I decided to write a custom engine just for the heck of it. That wasn't super wise, because I didn't have much of anything to make a game on until Saturday at 9pm. As far as engines go, I decided to try something new and write it in FRP, which took a day to wrap my head around.

The idea for the game was to take a Greg Egan short story, "Into Darkness", and port it into a game. In the story, the main character is running towards a black hole, which means nothing, even light, is allowed to move away from the black hole. You must run into darkness, and can only see where you are once it's too late.

Cool concept, but I wasn't sure how to make it fun until this morning. Since light is so important, I thought it would add to the atmosphere if there was no global oversight. I put some energy into writing a ray tracer, intending to make light a big mechanic, but I started it too late and got bogged down in the details of how the heck shaders work.
