I'm not really sure how the garlic and the mirrors slow your character down.

Maybe implement something to let the player know how long it will be until the sun rises
Also add in a way to see how far Van Helsing is away from you so you know what you are catching up to.
Maybe add in some sound effects and music to really set the mood.
