Run away from imps. Fire shotgun blast when Imps get into your personal space. Gather shotgun shells to use your shotgun. Shells spawn every 10 seconds (unless there is already one on the map).
PS: After 1 minute mark there is extra difficulty mechanic.

1. nice, Pico-8! I was wondering by the looks of the captures :)
2. nice idea to ask for holding a key (and displaying a bar) to begin, as this is a better insurance against errors (including for people like me that often toggle windows; the Alt key recognition by embedded Game Boy games is then not a good thing, as I learnt recently XD)
3. simple yet effective game/concept
4. I like how there is even a back view image for the head, shows some detail went into it! :)
5. apparently, the imps have two combined behaviours: 1) follow 2) bounce on the screen borders; consequently, I try running in circles, while staying not too close to the borders. You can even not shoot anymore at the swarm!
6. 26 seconds after a few tries
7. I like the retro sounds a lot! :) Even more than sfxr, actually X)
8. [spoiler] oh, extra difficulty = fast blue imps! I love their conjuring effect, and also the sound this makes. You can also lead them apparently, but without zigzagging, not sure this would be enough; back to firing!
9. 1 min 27 s! (not sure what caught me)
Takeaway: a nice simple little game with a strong retro feel, especially as to sound. The presentation is effective, you can get in the action right away. Just as I was thinking the game might be straightforward using my circling technique, the extra difficulty kicked in and ‘solved’ the problem, so this was a very good idea! I could imagine the game being extended through the addition of many other difficulties (say, one every minute, or less?); this could become a crazy hardcore arcade game, although it may be too much to take for me. X) Also getting a funny vibe through the player character always looking backwards and those little cute imps! The obvious criticism would be that the game is simple and rather classic, but it already feels working, playable, and enjoyable, so, the contract is fulfilled. ;)
Thanks for the Pico-8 feel, I enjoy retro games and especially portable ones (such as Game Boy). :)
[Do not forget to review and rate other games, if you have enough time; it will also help yours get noticed and have testers and feedback. :)]

As a coincidence, I stumbled upon three other Pico-8 games right before in a row! :)

Constraint is the mother of invention — and helpful small pixel art. ;) As it turns out, having limits is sometimes an advantage!
