No Farm, No Fowl
From deep within the soil, you emerge. You are the gourdmind: a sentient pumpkin with a heart of coal. You will never be understood, and the chickens know you are a threat. Harvest your spawn's lifepulp to gain upgrades, and destroy the filthy fowl, before they consume you.
Shoot seeds at incoming chickens to defend yourself. Occasionally, hitting a chicken with a seed will stick and cause a new pumpkin to grow. Protect these pumpkins until harvest time to acquire upgrades.
Survive as long as you can, collecting more upgrades to become more powerful. You will rule as supreme gourd eventually.
Carefull! Your pumpkin spawn hold the power of transformation. Do not let the chickens consume them, or they will become a monster almost more frightening than you.

This is my first Ludum Dare submission, but I feel pretty happy about the result, so don't worry too much about tearing me down in the comments, although constructive criticism is very welcome if you have it. And feel free to post your scores below! I set victory at my personal high score so no one would beat me.

I really like your game! Really well explained. Only thing I did not like was killing chickens, but it reminded me to the "Journey of the Prairie King". This would make a lovely mini-game within a game. Congratulations.

Loved it. The title is super cute and loved the use of theme. I definitely got territorial once it got to harvestin' time. My one piece of constructive criticism is that it took the game a little bit to get going, but once they started comin' they started comin'! Loved the graphics, loved the music. Great entry!

Congratulations on your first compo! Focused, short, and sweet; was fun to organize the chickens into one spot to make it easier to defend your seeds. It was also nice to be able to line up chickens to shoot through a couple of them at once, made me feel like I was really making decisions about the experience.

Art style was super crisp and gorgeous. The powerups are fun and the difficulty curve felt right for the first playthrough to get used to the mechanics.

A complete package of good gameplay, music, sfx, and graphics! It fit the theme well too. One small feedback I have is that I can walk outside of the map. Aside from that, very nice entry!

The music and art are just right! Tho I couldnt tell if the slight lag when chickens got hit with seeds was a slowdown effect or because of my potato pc :D

Really fun game! Loved the upgrades available as I harvested more pumpkins, and the chickens came at a good, challenging pace.

Very polished for a compo, the animations on those feathers are impressive, the pixel art is great and the music works well. I think the SFX are a bit rough in comparison but that's just cause everything else is so nice. The game's fun to play, limiting the bullet regeneration to force you to kill multiple enemies is interesting, but it made me repeatedly get in some dangerous positions and the fact that any chicken 1-shots you is a bit annoying, because it makes you want to play safe. Still pretty engaging trying out the different upgrades.

I had so much fun with this one! Loved all the upgrades, and the extra challenge of having to not only protect your mound to collect the pumpkins, but also ensure you kill the chickens closer to the center of the stage to give it the highest chance of survival. I was so delighted to see the giant chickens when they ate my pumpkins! Dash is super good for getting rid of them. Great work! (My high score is 145)

@rosypenguin Oh my God! No joke, Deepest Sword was one of the handful of LD games that I played prior to this which inspired me to participate! What an honor :)

Nice game, I liked it! It's a simple one, so I can't give too many suggestions for it, but I think I might've gotten further if instead of chickens insta-killing you, you could have lives tied to the number of pumpkins you have (getting hit you lose all your pumpkins, getting hit with no pumpkins kills you)! Other than that, I like it; I got a good 8 minutes of fun out of it, so I'm satisfied! :laughing:

By far this has been my kids favorite game. we all took turns playing it for well over an hour. great job.

Needs a bit more juice, but nice feeling overall. Boss chicken came out of nowhere :chicken:

@brandann Aww, yay! That makes me feel so good. I was expecting my son to be the one most into your game because he loves to play the bad guy, but my daughter was so excited by the idea of "collecting" the cute little slimes that she just wanted to keep on going forever.

Haha, this is cute little funny fun game :D. I love the graphics 😍. The multi-shots are fun especially when you hit 5 chicken at once. After some time the game starts to be quite adrenaline experience. I got 211 points and ended like this
I have found only one flaw, some upgrades are not clear what they do on the first sight.
