Carbineball

Sure, pinball isn't the oldest of techs out there but it was the first thing that come to mind thinking of ideas. Been going to the office a lot more (or at all) on my day job lately and quite recently a pinball machine has appeared there. So I guess that's why it came to mind thinking of older technology.

Carbineball is my take on pinball. It's not really that far off from normal pinballs but the main way to interact with the ball is quite a bit different. Your mouse cursor is basically a character that can bump the ball and is also equipped with two revolvers to interact with the ball from range too. So it's kinda similar to pong/breakout/arkanoid too.

So like in a classic arcade game fashion, you build up multiplier at the same time you rack up points and also need to be careful not to let your accumulated multiplier be lost. You can build it up by bumping the ball but need to shoot between bumps or the multiplier won't go up. There is also a sun bumper pad at the bottom of the screen that too increases your multiplier but it's also a bit risky as ball falling off the screen will obviously be a failure.

The board is basically split to three distinct section with own aims and interactions. There is a rotating bonus game picked every 30 second which will result in a lot more point than normal really encouraging you to not just keep doing one of them.

And finally there are a couple of different characters and balls to unlock and use with their own unique bonuses, strengths and weaknesses. Find a way to score big and claim a spot on the online leaderboards! Super interested to see and hear what strategies end up being the best ones and how crazy the scores will get.

Oh, and forgot to mention it anywhere in the game itself but there are alternate shoot keys Q/E to help touchpad users a bit.

I played several round but didn't get very high scores. I really like the 'game feel': it's fun to shoot, to bump the ball and there are many things to aim for in the pinball machine.

I couldn't figure out how am I supposed to aim my guns at the ball. They seem to miss often and I can't figure out the reason why.

I also found some technical issues with the game. Shooting too quickly causes performance to drop in the web version. And the ball keeps going off screen when I smack it, so I guess I have to be very gentle with it. 😅

@woona You don't really aim them. They always shoot where they're pointing so you just line em up. Except for one of the characters that actually keeps always aiming at the balls.

I really liked how juicy the game felt, but I found the controls a little frustrating (I have never been good at this type of game, to be honest, nothing wrong on your part). I got a score somewhere in the 10k range, can't remember.

A fun twist on classic pinball! The shooting mechanics and multiplier system add an interesting layer of strategy, making the game engaging and replayable. The old-school arcade feel fits the theme, although the connection could be stronger.

Great art style and animations! I has some slowness and music was lost at some point. Overall fun take on the pinball genre and totally full of potential to be something bigger. Well done!

Great cartoon visuals and fun music and sound effects! I enjoyed clicking around to let the, emm, yellow fuzzy buddy with two arms point at that place. Fun to play and I got myself onto the leaderboard. Nice to have some competitions, thx for your really polished game. I think this has the potential to be a party game.
My trick to this is to get the ball stuck somewhere narrow, and seems like I can cheat some points from that.

I haven't quite figured out all the bonuses yet, but I really like how the game feels and looks!

P.S. I changed my name, but the leaderboard still shows me as Anon 🤔

I love getting to play your games every Ludum Dare. I always look forward to it, and this one didn't disappoint! You always put so much love and polish into your entries. I absolutely love this one.

Great work, almost nothing bad to say about it other than maybe its too chaotic/confusing at times (especially at first).

Great job!!

Hi, nice take on a pinball! Liked the graphics and music. My potrato pc starts lo lag when effects come to live. Also sound resets every time. Nice entry!

@vorondesan Yea, it seems the volumes don't actually save when changed at the main menu but only through the esc menu when in the actual game scene.
