An old water-balance lift, 1889. You pour water into the counterweight tank, it gets heavier and pulls the cage with miners up the shaft. Too much water and the cage slams into the top. Too little and it stops halfway.
Three trips. Keep people under your lamp so the floor stays level, stop at the ledges to pick up more, slow down before the broken teeth on the drum. The last trip is a bit different.
Controls
- Left mouse, drag up: water - Right mouse, drag down: brake - Mouse: the lamp, people walk to the light - Left click: people grab each other and hold on (3 per trip) - Click the small DUMP handle: empty the tank between trips - Wheel: shaft map - Esc: pause
Headphones help. The game starts with a short newsreel and a lesson, you can skip both.
About
Made solo in 48 hours for the Compo, Unity and Blender. Lifts like this really worked on water and a brake, no engine, so it fit Old Tech.
All the art, models and sound were made during the jam. The sound is generated in code. Before the theme was announced I already had my own crowd simulation code (the sim, a pixel renderer and a small synth), that is the base code. The game itself was made in the 48 hours.
I think all the effort you put into the art really paid off—I enjoyed the visuals so much while playing! The balancing mechanic works really well with the elevator-raising mechanic, and the way they are presented makes everything feel very intuitive.
Good game. It was very creative and had a surprising twist ending; I liked it. It was a little overwhelming at first though, because there was a lot packed into a small display. It took me a minute to catch on, but once I did, it was fun.
The visuals and the sounds are amazing. The game has great coherent atmosphere. The gameplay is also interesting and unique. Unfortunately, there's a lot happening on the screen at a time and sometimes I was overwhelmed, sometimes I felt like randomly pressing buttons and the game was playing itself. I did manage to go through 3 levels... I think? At that point it looked like new mechanics were thrown in randomly and game was progressing on its own and I had no idea what was happening. 😆 But still, it was a really enjoyable experience.
The animation is great, the visual style is pleasant, and the levels are varied and enjoyable! At first, I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on, but then I figured it out, and I thought the idea was cool :)
The visual style and sound design is impressive! I found it a bit crowded visually though and it wasn't very intuitive to understand what was going on, even after doing the tutorial.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere you built around the lift. The delicate timing needed to precisely manage the water weight is a great tension builder, and achieving that perfect balance to control the ascent feels very mechanically satisfying.
It is so well made, especially the graphics and all kinds of details, but the gameplay goes bit to harsh and I don't really understood clearly every bit of what was going on, it is nice to include a tutorial ( again its so well made with so much content) but still.
Graphics are truely stunning, sound design is here, there's a tutorial, the game is original, but as man,y other said, I felt a bit overwhelmed by eveyrthing going on at the same time and couldn't understand easily what I was supposed to or what I was not doing well. Yet it's a huge work and the animations, the mechanics and the art make it a nice project gg !
