DAISY is a retro simulation game set in the 1990s.

This game is inspired by the first song sung by a computer--Daisy Bell. It was sung by IBM704 in 1961. The BGM of this game is a 8-bit version of It.

The Story

Deep within a small mountain village of the Ludumland nation—where the locals speak the unique Ludumese language—lives a passionate geek. Driven by a love for music and technology, he writes a vocal synthesis program and proudly names it DAISY.

Despite the sluggish computing power of 1990s hardware, painfully slow upload times, and limited resources, he refuses to give up. Using his trusty PC, he continuously composes and produces music, determined to bring joy and melodies to the people of Ludumland.

Gameplay & Loop

Your journey revolves around managing your music production business:

1. Accept Orders: Take on music composition requests from clients.

2. Work on the Computer: Use the DAISY software to create and arrange the requested tracks.

3. Submit & Earn: Exit the computer interface to deliver your completed orders.

4. Upgrade: At the end of each week, you will receive your payout. Use your earnings to upgrade your PC hardware, improving performance and speed.

How to play

At the beginning you will find youself facing a computer with a sticknote showing your orders. Take an order and press E to zoom in and control the computer. Select notes at the bottom and place them on the computer. You can remove them by right-clicking. Press shift to switch between normal notes and lengtherned notes. After you finished, press E to leave the computer and complete your order. It takes time, if orders aren't completed at the end of the week, they will expire. You will receive money after completing your orders. You can buy upgrations with your money. Press A or D to rotate the camera and the billboard with buttons to purchase upgrations are right behind you. Press ESC to return to the main menu. The clock on the wall shows time. This game has no ending.

I use my voice as Daisy's voice because i think it will make the game funny. Maybe you will find it humorous.

Use of Generative AI

I used AI to finish the code, and write a script to generate the music.

Really cool entry! I played through it and had a great time.
Here is a quick breakdown of my thoughts:
• Gameplay & Design: The core mechanics feel solid and intuitive right from the start. The gameplay loop is engaging, and the controls feel responsive and fair.
• Visuals & Art Style: The visual direction fits the overall mood really well. Everything looks cohesive, and the presentation makes it very clean to follow what's happening on screen.
• Audio: The sound effects and audio design add a lot of punch to the experience and help build the atmosphere.
• Theme Interpretation: You did a fantastic job incorporating the jam's theme into the core loop in a creative and clever way!
Constructive Polish Idea: If you decide to update or expand this after the jam, adding a few extra feedback cues (like juice/particles or subtle screen shake) or expanding on a few mechanics could make it feel even more polished!
Overall, awesome job for a jam project! Left you a high score/rating. Keep up the great work! 🚀

The buttons are barely responsive, and there’s not much gameplay. Overall, it’s an interesting concept for a game jam.

Interesting concept, but I struggled with the controls and figuring out what to do exactly in the beginning. Nice graphics and sound too! You've got potential!

Tips: you can't control the computer unless you pressed E. You need to first select the notes at the bottom and then tap the score to place them. After you placed them, you can tap the "play" button to listen to it.

Haha, ok, this is very strange and interesting. I think you were the one who said they were into Vocaloid; and I can see that 😂. Tbh, I was very confused when I first started playing, but figured it out eventually. Once I did, I had a lot of trouble with my note length and being unable to remove incorrect notes. I didn't realize the note length was a toggle. So some kind of visual indicator and a way to delete notes would be really helpful. LOL also, when I finally finished my first song, it said I ran out of time!!! How fast am I supposed to do this???? LOL the first song should be easy, when the player is trying to figure everything out!

That said, there's some cool audio idea going on. I'd love to see again where it's a bit easier to play! Nice job!

The game has an interesting concept! At first, I found the controls a bit difficult to get used to, and I wasn’t entirely sure what I was supposed to do. However, overall, I had a good experience. The graphics and sound design are great and really help bring the game to life. I can see a lot of potential in this project! Keep up the good work, and good luck with further development!

Well done! The 1990s desk, sticky-note orders and Windows-style Daisy Bell editor are wonderfully atmospheric. A short first-order tutorial for placing notes would ease onboarding. Congrats again!

Hehe just wait until somebody decides to make Rush E with it (of course they'd have to mod it) but it'd be insane. Good job though, nice mini-DAW!

It's an impressive entry with a likeable vibes, unfortinatly the topic itself sits so far from me I could not enjoy it, but I appricate the work it must have went into making the music player work, good job! 🙂

the daisy bell connection is such a lovely idea for a game about old tech, and the 8-bit version of the song fits perfectly. i loved the little village and the made up language, it made the whole thing feel like a lost 90s cd-rom. how did you make the vocal synth sound, is it sampled or generated? and thanks for the tips in the comments, they helped a lot.

@perrarancino the music is made by script. I used ai to write a python script, which created a midi file and then used it to make an mp3 file.

The way you tied the game's inspiration back to that original 1961 computer song is really clever. Blending the historical IBM reference with the specific 8-bit BGM gives the whole simulation a really unique retro charm. Well done on this project!

Cool idea! I really like it as it's challenging in its own way but still fast to grasp. And it fits the theme so incredibly well, so - chapeau!
