Danger Looms

They never should have made the Loom programmable. They definitely shouldn't have made it capable of programming itself. Now, the silk-hungry Loom rules the empire with an iron fist.
An interactive fiction, mildly Fallen London-esque game made in 72 hours for Ludum Dare (jam), for the theme "old tech." I overscoped massively and am barely awake at this point, so please forgive the poor description. I wasted several hours trying to make the graphics look more like a genuine woven pattern by hand-drawing normal maps that were accurate down to the individual thread, only to realize that this would not work at all due to problems with aliasing. Aaaaaargh.
There are multiple possible endings, including two to four "good endings," depending how you count.

Dang this game was so captivating and fun!! I got the first ending when I shared the "confession" with the Archivists, and then I worked harder and got a ton of money, then my money got stolen (RUDE), then I used all my secrets to get the Loom to trust me and BLEW IT UP. Truly, a really clean, well-made game with excellent and interesting lore and I loved playing it. Got some Cultist Simulator vibes, too. Wonderful work.

( SPOILERS FOR THE GAME )
Even though I'm not that into text based rpgs, your games definitely interest me quite a lot when I play them lol
Right off the bat, the world building was great. Especially when you see the ramifications of the loom in general. I even got a few achievements like filing a bug report and the one about hoping they don't use a flame emoji. I also died due to being pushed to origin. I guess I pushed my luck a little too hard there lol.
Going by the first sentence of the punch cards, I'm guessing we were going to destroy the loom through data poisoning ? Lol. Honestly, this game was pretty interesting and well written imo.
I didn't manage to get 2 of the secrets, mostly because I'm honestly not sure where to look, but either way I can say that I definitely really liked this. Especially the graphical style. Kinda makes me want to make an rpg in general now lol. Great stuff

This is awesome. The writing is interesting but concise. The world is immediately understandable but not too familiar. And even though it's a text based game the visuals while traversing the map are really nice. I thought the art looks like woven thread, despite your normal map woes!

@jabzey To clarify somewhat, the final graphics look reasonably like woven fabric because I went with my fallback plan of "just grab a generic fabric normal map from the internet." But hypothetically someone familiar with textiles could look at it and say "this is obviously just a plain weave, so any pattern on it must be printed rather than woven into the fabric itself," which I guess in retrospect is a level of nitpicking based on niche domain knowledge that is absolutely out of scope for a game jam.
Anyways, thanks for playing and commenting!

checked out your game after seeing your comment on mine! Funny enough, I also considered making a programming game about the Jacquard loom at first (but focus more on the programming part), but I just couldn’t figure out how the art would be look like haha. nice game and really love the visual style you went with!

This is a very substantial game and an intriguing story. I really like your use of the theme and the map that you created is very visually pleasing. The world building is very good and it feels like a fully-realised place with tensions and ideologies. The only thing I feel like it really needed was some music and maybe a few atmospheric sounds at times. Overall, great job!

(WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS)
Tried to beat it four times very captivating story right from the start. Tought I managed to get myself soft locked with spending my final 20 money to go back to my house and now I cannot go anywhere but thankfully I had the entry permits.
Is it possible to get the 7 loom trust even? I don't think I managed to get above 4.
Very nice entry.

@freamdev It is possible to get 7 loom trust, but you have to be extremely unethical, and also really know what you're trying to do, and it's also a bit grindy (this was my first time making something in this *Fallen London*-esque genre, and I ran out of time to balance it well). Also, if you run out of money you can always still work your way back up by exploring the winding streets, where you will sometimes find a single coin on the ground, but that's extremely grindy as well.

This is a very interesting concept. It is one of those games that you cannot play in a hurry. The art is very good. I just wish there were a bit of audio playing to enhance the atmosphere that you are trying to create.
