Kamchatka
Play on itch.io
Leningrad, USSR, mid-1980s. You are the stoker at the coal-fired Kamchatka boiler room, keeping a five-story apartment building warm through the winter nights.
Feed coal into the furnace. Adjust the draft to control the heat and fuel use, then turn the radiator valves to distribute warmth throughout the building. The weather outside also affects the building’s temperature. If an apartment stays too cold or too hot, its residents will leave. Restore a comfortable temperature and they’ll return. Keeping occupied apartments warm earns comfort, which you can spend on heating upgrades.
Listen to a lo-fi instrumental arrangement of a song by Viktor Tsoi (Kino). One track is available from the start, and you can unlock more tracks in the work journal using the comfort you earn. The collection includes eight instrumental arrangements.
Complete all five upgrades and keep all 35 apartments comfortable to reach the main goal. Your progress carries forward.
The interface is available in English and Russian.

Also, for such a relaxing, meditative game, it's a bit unfortunate that switching to another window automatically pauses the game, especially since there's no downloadable Windows version.
That said, such a unique and atmospheric idea! I love the Soviet setting, and the lo-fi arrangements of Viktor Tsoi's songs are a really nice touch. Turning the everyday job of a stoker into a game is a clever interpretation of the theme. Great work!
Also, thanks to this game, I learned that Leningrad is apparently located in Kamchatka. And they say video games are a waste of time!
The UI is a little confusing, though. It's not always obvious what affects what, and I wish things were a bit more visual and intuitive. But overall, I really enjoyed it!
And that girl... somebody please tell her that practicing those kinds of gestures in Leningrad is a VERY dangerous idea.
I originally imagined the game as a desktop companion game to — a small window you could leave open on your desktop while doing other things. For Ludum Dare, I chose a browser version because I worried players might not want to download the game.
Thank you for the thoughtful feedback and the kind words about the atmosphere, Soviet setting, and music. I’m glad the idea of the game resonated with you
The woman is just tending to the flowers 😂
Thanks for the feedback! I’m glad you enjoyed the atmosphere!
