Play as Mr. Oldman relieving his childhood by trying to finish the game he never could. What will happen when he finally succeeds?
This is my 4th Compo attempt, 2nd submission. No AI was used to generate code / art / references, 100% Human made.
Power up your old reliable Nintendold console! Platform you way to victory! And fight vicious monsters! Wanna get to the ending and don't have the patience to beat it yourself? Like any good old retro game, there are cheats (Definitely not leftover I forgot to disable)! 1. !> Press 'A' or 'D' for a chance to kill all enemies 2. !> Press 'Space' to jump hands-free
This cracked me up - so many good details in your designs 😂 I was assuming the platformer part of the game would be virtually impossible, but I was pleasantly surprised by how playable it was! Still very challenging, but it was fun in a rage-game kind of way haha
I had a similar idea at first! But I went a completely different direction. I love this idea lol, and you executed it pretty well given our insane time crunch.
Its super gimmicky in the best way possible, I could see this being another rage game 😆
Having to restart the console after falling into the abyss is frustrating AF but I suppose thats the genre for you!
Felt a sense of accomplishment at mastering the absurd controls and finishing the game... but now, after the ending, all I can think about is how six-year-old me was never able to finish Final Fantasy Adventure for the original Game Boy and wondered if he ever would.
I was trying to get past this point for like 5-10 minutes, but I just couldn't managed to get past this. I don't know if the fault of the game or the old tech, or if I've become too old and clumsy, but I just couldn't get past that jump. 😅
Great game, we interpreted the theme similarly with the old game console, though I really like what you did with it! Having to press the controls with the mouse added a neat challenge to the platformer. It took me a bit to figure out the best way to jump. I think I eventually made it pretty far but then I accidentally jumped onto an enemy and I didn't play for much longer after that haha. I also really like how you used the power button for restarting the game where you not only have to turn it off but back on again, it's not a whole lot but it's cooler than a boring restart button.
@xedur I bet your OLDBOY console is just broken :) (But more seriously, if you can specify what Platform / Browser you are using - I can check if it's somehow Unity physics thing)
@eoshadows Thank you! Yeah I already had this power on system mostly for show and polish, and then thought to myself, why not use it as a restart mechanic? Problem is I didn't really knew how to properly communicate it to the player so I added the help message above, which I really hate lol
The framing is the star here: Mr. Oldman lying there with his belly out, finally trying to beat the game from his childhood, is genuinely funny and a lovely take on Old Tech. The style and humor carry it. The platformer inside felt fairly familiar to me, though, so it reads more like a great little performance than a game I'd keep playing. If the old man's world and the game on the screen influenced each other more, it could really sing. Great job on your 2nd Compo!
@gevernus Thank you! Regarding your last point, I actually made some VA for when you die / kill enemies but I didn't manage to properly connect it to the game so I ditched it. Without spoiling too much, there is still some influence between the game and Oldman's world at the end of the game :)
LOL this is hilarious, but I couldn't even get onto the first platform. Like this is intentionally frustrating, but a bit too frustrating for me. Maybe give me a higher jump so I have even some chance of getting anywhere?? Hahaha that said, it was totally hilarious. The old man "uhhhhh" sound was too funny.
This is hilarious, I am so glad to be alive in the perfect window of human history to witness the glory that is this game.
As a gameboy developer I'm biased to like this, but as objective as I could be, this is both peak comedy and creativity under the pressure of a time limit.
@serendibity-efreet Thank you! If you want to continue at an easier difficulty, take a looks at the cheats I added (aka debugging I forgot to remove from final build)
Dude, this game is so hard! I keep wanting to yell at this guy to grab the device properly and move his fingers faster! But in a way, it’s actually kind of fun game :)
This was very frustrating to play, but in a good way. The guy kept moving the console whenever I wanted to jump left, which meant I instead jumped right XD The physics was a little janky here and there (like getting stuck on walls midair when walking into them), but this actually added to the feel of this being an old janky game :D
I have to confess I used the cheats to make it to the ending, but it was a fun experience nonetheless. The ending was also very funny XD Really well done!
The OLDBOY console and that huge hovering finger are such a funny way to frame a platformer. I really like the idea of returning to the childhood game you never finished, and using the console's power switch to restart is a lovely detail for Old Tech!
"Play as Mr. Oldman"... oh... I do. Every day, man. Every damn day.
Great idea, great execution. This is such a simple idea but it's also so clever and the whole design fits together perfectly. It manages to walk a fine line between a rage game and an endearing experience really well. My only gripe with it is that sometimes the clicks register incorrectly, sometimes it triggers the wrong direction. I'm not sure if that is by design, though, in an effort to simulate old man reflexes and response time. You can also get stuck on the sides of platforms, but that can sometimes end up helping you (and I needed all the help I could get). Overall, this was a great submission! Good job!
the whole concept of an old man finally finishing the game he never could is so good, and the nintendold details are everywhere. i died a lot but the cheats saved me and i appreciate that you left them in on purpose lol. did you design the ending first and build the game around it, or did it come together while you were making the levels? really fun entry.
A hilarious, clever take on old tech helping Mr. Oldman finally beat the childhood game he never finished. The awkward controls and power switch restart fit the concept perfectly. Frustrating in the best rage-game way, and wonderfully funny!
A new way to interface with old tech, I'd have gotten nowhere without the cheats. The aesthetic and sound design really nail the vibe of this, Oldman isn't looking his best. I can totally see this going viral with streamers, congrats!
I love a good rage game, but one annoyed me in particular more than other rage games have, because good rage games have fair controls that are difficult by design, but the controls aren't fair here, I'm pressing one button, but it instead presses another, or the old man's hand wobbles. I did make it to the end eventually, but (old) man, was it frustrating!
@vorondesan@human-writes-code@brimstone I'll take a look at the left button zone issue, I cant think of a reason this would happen specifically with the left button right now but I'm not near my machine. The cursor that is checked against the button is not the mouse but rather the finger, and the finger moves towards the mouse button in a slight delay. It could also be cause from Oldman shaking his console (Button zones also move with it). I should probably create a post-jam version with option to disable the hand delay and hand shaking

Which, I suppose, is a compliment. :) Lots of fun, in a "If i never play this again it will be too soon" kinda way!
@william-corrin @b4ux1t3 Thank you!
I don't know why, but all ideas I come up with for game jams are rage games XD Soooorryyyy
Well, in case you do get to finish FFA, I hope you will have a different ending from Mr. Oldman's 😆

This was certainly a unique game!
But it's fun!

Unique jumps and moves

Excellent spin on difficulty as well!

Very fun jam game!
