ONE MORE CANDLE

A sleepless night at a trading terminal. You need money for five more weeks. And she is writing to you.

▶ Play in your browser (about 5–10 minutes): https://lovecreep.itch.io/one-more-candle

It's 2023. I'm in Chile, broke and alone. To stay, I need money for at least five weeks. The trading terminal is still open. One more candle — then bed.

- Cards move the market.
- The candle on the desk is your money. Watch its colour.
- When she writes, answer or stay silent. Every reply costs part of the night.

Play with sound — headphones recommended. Based on true events. This is the first night; the game is still in development. Contains strong language.

How to play

- Any key or click — start
- Enter or click the deck — draw a card
- X — "Enough. I'm out" (keep what's left)
- Space — read on (story screens)
- Esc — pause: how to play, language, music
- M — sound on/off

Old Tech

The oldest tech in the room is a candle. Around it: a Winamp-style player, Windows 95 cursors and a newspaper that calls you back to the market.
Made in these 72 hours on top of my earlier prototype: the start screen and intro, the tutorial, the newspaper market call, liquidation, the music and the jukebox, the cursors, the results screen and the credits. The card mechanic, the story and the photos are older, so I opted out of Graphics and Audio.

Tell me in the comments

1. When did you close the position — and why then?
2. Did you answer her, or watch the market?
3. How many weeks did you have at dawn?

I read every comment and play the games of people who comment.

Music

- Snarls — "Eternal Flame", from the EP "In Heaven There's Rainbows", courtesy of Take This To Heart Records
- Olle August — "Herbstlied in Zartbitter"
- Portrayal — "Out of Light"
- blue diner. — "Morningside"
- Стереошум — «Кончилась Музыка»
- …and one hidden song.

Languages: English, Russian (Esc → language). By Alex Catson. Full credits in the game.

It's an interesting concept, but there isn't a tutorial for the money-management game. I didn't understand what was going on and just ended up in the red. Although the idea of combining it with a story sounds cool.

The game includes a tutorial; if the initial information isn't enough, you can also check a guide via the pause menu.

Neat concept and a really cool vibe. I love the music! I held my position until dawn. I wasnt sure when to close out. I answered everything. I only had four weeks at dawn.

I liked the vibes and look of the game but the gameplay feels like interactive fiction with a high probability of loss. I didn't identify with the protag. The winning strat seemed to be to exit the market as soon as you got a couple greens in a row.

Thanks for the feedback. That’s exactly how it was designed. Four weeks is not bad at all—had the game been fully finished, you would have been able to progress further and see what happens next! To play more successfully, you should exit the market more often and take advantage of news events. Whenever you close a position, the market will call out to you and present you with a piece of news!

Yes, a winning strategy is to exit early and take advantage of the news that the market provides. The probability of a loss is very real, so yes—that’s the case.

Really cool idea! Drawing cards to grow the candle while the news warns of red cards ahead creates real tension, and deciding when to cash out is a great hook. The chat with J. and the memory scene give it real heart. Great stuff!

The game has a great atmosphere. I really got into. The visuals are great, and the sound is great too. Great job.
