Made in 72 hours for LD 60 on the theme "Old tech"

Press Any Key is a story-driven sysadmin management game packed with minigames. It’s late December 1999, and the Y2K bug is about to hit the world.

Run around the office and save Stein General Business Consulting & Associates Limited Co. from digital doom. Get to know a colorful cast of coworkers, hear the most impeccable stories on your smoke breaks, and break a leg trying to save the company a few bucks.

☕ Stay caffeinated, but not too caffeinated
Coffee keeps you sharp, but too much of it will give you a panic attack. Balance coffee and water to stay as productive as you can.

🚬 Take a breather
Managing everything is exhausting. Grab some cigarettes, step outside and hang out with your colleagues.

🖥️ Beat the clock
Never lose sight of the main goal: get the office Y2K-ready before the clock strikes midnight.

Enjoy!

That’s how we want this thing to be, at the very least.

A system administrator trying to hold an office together just before Y2K is a great setup for Old Tech. The detailed art looks lovely :) great work! I wonder what "SGBCALC" actaully does lol consulting for tech?

Great system administrator simulator. I really liked the graphics, they are top-notch. The audio is just as good. It was an interesting experience. Good job!

Someone recommended this game in the comments, so I played it.

I liked how everything looks. It’s very stylish. I also enjoyed the gameplay, similar to Punch Club or older games where you move around an isometric level and always have plenty to do. It feels like an office life simulator.

The setting hooked me right away: an office with old computers in 1999. My first thought was, “Wow, that’s interesting. I haven’t seen anything like this before.”

There’s a little too much text for me. As a player, I’d really appreciate being able to play without having to read so much. Overall, though, it’s really cool.

The music sounds grand and rich. I wouldn’t expect music like that in this kind of game. It’s excellent.

I don’t know how many artists worked on this, but the artwork is beautiful. If your artist has an ArtStation profile or something similar, please share it. I’d love to see more of their work.

@gamescodedogs Thanks a lot for your feedback!
This was our second Ludum Dare as a team. This one was a bit tougher than we first planned, but we have room to grow. We only have one artist on our team.
You can check out his work from our previous Ludum Dare here: https://walking-barrel.itch.io/the-last-headline

He doesn't have a portfolio yet besides his previous work. Maybe it's a sign to create one! But if you'd like, I can share his contact info with you.

@helgust Your LD59 project also looks amazing :) The Soviet apartment blocks outside the window and the pixel art poster of Lenin (I think it's Lenin) made me laugh :)

Very nice setup, good story and the mood is here. Too much dialogs before gameplay, but that's just my opinion 😊

I didn't make it to the end because, not being very comfortable reading in English, I didn't quite grasp the plot 😢

That said, I can confirm that there are plenty of mini-games! I even noticed that others are planned (and it’s great that they work, even without polished graphics!)

Also, I didn't quite understand the purpose of the coffee and exhausting is not moving, is that features that hasn't been implemented yet?
Helgustauthor20 Oct 2026, 22:27
Hi @loiclegrosfrere! Yeah, they’re implemented, but I think they’ll need a rework in the post-LD version of our game.

You can drink coffee to get a speed boost, and each new cup gives you an additional speed boost. In the name of productivity! If you exceed some level coffee, you will receive a panic attack, to bring things to normal you can drink water from cooler. To drink coffee or water from cooler press R

The exhaustion level was initially meant to fine any player who stayed at work after 18:00, when the working day is over. Then, the higher your exhaustion level, the higher the chance you’d oversleep and be late for work. But after a few tests, we found that no one stays at the office after 18:00, so it’ll need some rework!

I'm really impressed, it's very stylish and plays really well. Unfortunately, my English is pretty bad, so I couldn't quite follow the story

It felt like I was working in an office in 1999 again. 😄 So many great little details. 👌 Also.. saw in a previous comment, call it "Office Life Simulator"

I love those little minigames, quite accurate of how the Old Tech "problems" used to be. Laughed very hard when the mouses were to be cleaned.
Well done! Really liked the music!
