Rhythm Coders

Old computer parts form a band, and you're the producer.

Drag a hard drive, floppy drive, modem, CRT monitor or speech chip onto the stage and it starts playing its own loop. Stack up to seven performers to build a track. Every part plays over the same four chords (Am, F, C, G), and new parts come in on the next bar, so anything you put together stays in time and in key.

What's in it

- 25 performers in 5 acts: Beats (a hip-hop crew), Effects (a punk band), Melody (a jazz combo), Voices (a choir in robes) and Choir. Each one has its own sound, animation and costume.
- 5 hidden bonus shows: find the right trio of parts and the stage turns into a disco. A mirror ball comes down, two old-tech guests walk in (a telegraph, a gramophone, a tube radio, a rotary phone), and they play eight bars of new music with a drum roll, two drops and a breakdown.
- Boot Sequence: the biggest secret. It's sixteen bars of robot house where a vocoder sings "the machines are alive," the power cuts out before the last chorus, and an acid bassline comes in.
- Overclocking: push the tempo above 130 BPM and the band starts to glow, shake, sweat and finally smoke.
- Live FX pads: crash, drop, stutter, tape stop, filter sweep, half time and double time, all played in time with the beat.
- Mixer and recorder: mute, solo and set the volume of each part, save up to six lineups, and record your mix to an audio file.

Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no framework. All the music runs through Strudel (AGPL-3.0): each performer is a Strudel pattern.

Third-party assets: Sonic Pi drum samples (CC0), WebAudioFont General MIDI instruments (MIT), the TidalCycles Dirt-Samples and tidal-drum-machines sample banks, two SampleFocus recordings (Standard License, processed), and the Fredoka and VT323 fonts (OFL). Really cool and creative concept! I love the idea of adding different characters, each making their own sounds, and combining them to create unique music. It's fun to experiment with different combinations and see what kind of melodies you can make. Great idea for a game jam!

Wow this is crazy cool! Well done!! I don't really have any note or constructive critique, it's super easy to pick up and start doing stuff, the art is cute, the beat is catchy, it's just a fun toy! Well done!

Haha, what a playful UI over Strudel.CC (rather a tool than a game but ok, it's cute).

@aweskybear nice feedback! Did you try collecting the bonus discs? Thanks for playing :)

this is so much fun! as an audio-noob I'm in awe about how everything sounds nice in every combination, and the personification of the sounds is an awesome idea :D

I really enjoyed this! It reminded me of Sprunki, and turning old hard drives, floppy drives, modems and monitors into the performers was a fun idea. The audio was the highlight for me—I loved how the different parts sounded together. Great work!

this is such a clever toy, dragging a hard drive or a modem onto the stage and having it fall into the same four chords is really satisfying, and the fact that everything stays in key means you can't really make it sound bad. the art and animations give it a ton of personality too. did you build the loops in a daw first and then cut them to the same bpm, or is it all synthesized in engine? would love to see more acts.

Interesting concept. It's a bit silly that a music game has set "don't rate for audio". 😅

@xedur ahahaha right? We don’t have any music!! You can create your own music here, though!

The blending of old computer hardware with musical rhythm is such a great concept. I love that the system dictates that everything has to fit into the same four chords, which makes building a track feel like a really satisfying exercise in production.

Really cool idea - making music out of old computer hardware)) I especially like that every component has its own sound and animation. From the description, it looks like there are tons of interesting combinations to discover, and the secret performances and effects give you even more reasons to experiment.

Big plus for the Old Tech theme, too. It fits the concept perfectly! Overall, this looks like a really creative and unusual music-making sandbox. Great job, and good luck with the jam!))
