Snakia

snakia-demo.gif
Snakia is a NES game mimicking the experience of playing Snake II on those old Nokia phones. There's a small twist, though: you need to move your thumb to press the keypad buttons instead of directing the snake yourself (unless you enable the "Cheat" option, but why would you?)

Instructions
============

- Arrow keys move the thumb
- Z (or "A" on the console) presses the keypad button
- On the keypad, 2, 4, 6 and 8 act as directions, and 5 is used to select
- When controlling the snake, you can also use the diagonals (1, 3, 7, 9); it's somewhat easier that way (I used to play that way on my Nokia 2280)

Features
========

- 6 "mazes" (if an absence of a maze counts as a maze)
- 9 speed levels (which doubles as score multipliers)
- 6 random critters to eat (they spawn after eating every 5 fruits, last 20 ticks on screen, give 3x points + a bonus based on ticks left and don't cause the snake to grow)
- Cheat mode: if you are tired of controlling the snake indirectly, this makes the controls more direct (no diagonals, though)
- High scores: separate per maze and per cheats off/on

//

Changelog
=========

- 2026/10/23: small bugfix update - previously, pressing "3" while moving down would cause an instant game over

Great twist for the movement, i love that mashing a diagonal button (1, 3, 7 and 9) makes the snake go in diagonal without the hassle of going between two buttons and pressing them.

I also like that this game could be put in a NES cartridge and plays directly on the system.

Good game !

Cute twist on the movement!
And the diagonal keysade we wonder of that how it worked back then but I really can't remember 😅

The _But Buttons_ game by @euler-moises was a good warm-up for this game. Nice job setting up the game in a way to be modular enough to support multiple level layouts, gameplay speeds, and more.

Having click/touch controls would be really nice I think, just have the thumb jump to the pressed button. Maybe making it NES compatible is why it was not implemented though?

Lastly, the snake swallowing animation was cute, I was pleasantly surprised that the large critters were edible.

@nbumgardner yes, with it being an actual NES game there's little I could do in terms of click/touch. To be honest, there *are* homebrew games that are able to be played with the SNES mouse (with some adapter I suppose?), but I've never implemented such thing before and I don't even know if that JS emulator supports it)
