Pitch Class Dodge

This game is from the old Ludum Dare platform. You can try viewing the original page on Web Archive

Well, here it is. I started on Thursday, and was hoping to do somewhat better than this, but I ran out of steam last night after foolishly spending the entire day fighting ALSA, which is why the submitted version has a random arpeggio generator rather than a real score. The game seems to run smoothly on my GNU/Linux development machine, but it may be a bit choppy on Windows, and it's oversensitive to things like the window being moved around because I probably made some marginal architectural decisions because I was in a hurry. (This is why my work style doesn't like accelerating from nothing on such short notice. So observing the process happening has been informative for me!)

It may also be loud depending on your setup, so maybe turn down your volume first.

The Linux version requires SDL 1.2 and libpng 1.2 to be installed on the system. The Windows version comes with the DLLs in the zip file.

Instructions:

You are a scout traveling through a hyperspace corridor to rescue escaped survivors from a capital ship that disintegrated due to an engine malfunction. They can't survive long in hyperspace, so you'll need to get to them quick. If you don't, the sympathetic magic units in their suits will cause you to blow up when their shields fail.

Normally, this would just be a matter of using the arrow keys to maneuver toward them---but wait! A bumbling music wizard has decided to play some Chaos Chimes in the corridor, creating a colorful nebula. Not only will the corrosive nebula clouds disintegrate you at the slightest touch, but they've attracted a swarm of angry space bees that are chasing you!

Fortunately, your ship is equipped with a Color Capacitor and a Freeze Shield. Use A, S, or D when vertically adjacent to (but not smashing into) the red, green, or blue nebula gas to skim the gas to boost away from the space bees, but don't get the color wrong, or you'll be slowed down instead! Use F to make your ship invulnerable for a short, fixed period---but remember that you can't move while you're shielded! And remember that you must pick up _every_ survivor that appears on the screen, no matter how inconveniently they're located, or you will lose a life.

It may get very unfair.

Good luck!
