gcrl - Garbage Collector roguelike

gcrl is a simple roguelike where you play as a garbage collector (the Java kind, not the dumpster-at-the-end-of-the-street kind). Pointers to allocated memory will appear in your dungeon - walk over them to free the memory once the number of references to them decreases to 0.

I was trying to get a Windows release as well, but mingw and pdcurses didn't want to play nice and I've got another project to finish. Sorry about that.

You jump to the invalid instruction exception entry point. You die...

You had a 64-bit address space.
You could recognize invalid objects.
You were hallucinating.
You were incremental.
You had two generations.
You were O(1) in stack space.
You were O(1) in auxiliary memory space.
You were O(N^2) in time (worst case).
You were ill. (SIGILL, that is.)
You are dead.

You were noninteractive.
You never sent any signals.
You never blocked any other threads.
You never used VM overcommit.

Goodbye fzn the Rogue Garbage Collector...
You died at 0x7fffd0937780 at stack level 5 with 150 MB of arena under your control, after 10 full cycles.
You didn't beat your previous score.

Hahaha! Do I detect a fellow nethack player? After playing this a bit more, I'm wondering about expanding it into a more complete roguelike. Could give me something to do during boring lecture classes...

Nice nethack-ish dungeons. I had forgotten that in nethack-clones stuff only happens when you make a move, and I was waiting there for memory references to pop up for a bit :)

Btw on my truetype-font, antialiased xterm, there are some yellow artifacts at the edge of characters when I walk to the left. That doesn't happen when using regular old-style X fonts. I can't say if it's a bug with xterm's ttf support or not.

Neat concept. Kind of easy though -- I had to try to fail. It would have been more of a challenge if the pointers were walking I think.

May your code always compile without warnings or errors.

The dungeons look good. I like the idea of a roguelike with a computer theme. The binary appears to be 64 bit, it wouldn't run on my machine. Luckily it was very easy to compile :-)
