Layers

An adventure game/interactive story in Twine, "Layers" puts you in the shoes of a disaffected member of a creepy cult. You need to get free and save your fellow victims. In the process, you discover a way to shift between different planes of existence.

Note: in a few cases, the commands may continue below the bottom of the screen. If it looks like anything is missing, just scroll down.

It is possible to die (though in most cases, you need to do something rash for that to happen). However, it is possible to restart from significant points in the game without needing to replay the entire thing. It's impossible to render the game unwinnable (except by insta-death), but there are a few different paths to victory.

Inspirations:
*the works of Porpentine, especially "The Sky in the Room" and "Ultra Business Tycoon III"

Really interesting concept of inventory use here.

(This text is a bit hard for non-native speakers) Everyway I liked the idea of switching between states

@Caridorc: Sorry about that. It is rather text-heavy, and the text is pretty dense.

In general:

I would have liked to do more with the inventory system (even though it is very rough around the edges): It felt a bit stupid to have the player go through nearly 3/4 of the game with an empty inventory. At least I got all the bugs out of it, or so I hope.

Pretty cool. I liked the idea of shifting states. This could be developed into a really satisfying longer game I feel. Good work for a weekend!

Nice idea and well-written. My main criticism would be that I often felt I was merely guessing the correct response, and more often than not I got it "wrong". As such I grew somewhat detached before the end of the game, but good job nonetheless!

Also, from the very first scene: "You know the man to your left... The woman to your left is very young...." - are they both to your left?

@alastaira: Guh, completely missed that. Yeah, that was simply a typo.

Proofreading is the first casualty of LD.

Very deep and kind of depressing. But I was satisfied by sticking my hand through the cult leader. Would be nice if the background or font changed depending on the state.

@deathray: That would definitely be cool! If I ever make a post-compo version, I'll see if I can work that in.
