This game was well polished and really fun. High Score: 3650. Quite difficult at first, maybe the tutorial could include enemies or the faster enemies only spawn later in the game. The jump sounds were also a stand-out feature as well as the multiple maps.
@tiny-pig thanks so much for the feedback, it means a lot! I’ve always had trouble making games feel fair and balanced, and will definitely look into making the enemy’s progressively harder as the game goes on if I continue to work on the project. Thanks for the feedback :)
Nice! Very difficult I only got 3100ish, I skipped the tutorial first time and didn't know you could shoot.. Also first enemy I saw I thought it was a powerup :') great submission!
This is a tough game. I think having to control platforming as well as aiming and shooting enemies with a mouse might be a bit too much. I think if it was replaced with a more typical "jump on the enemy's head to kill it", it would be more doable. But I love the retro theme, and it was pretty fun to play.
The movement and jump feels really nice, and the game looks and sounds great. I think the shooting kind of hinders this game - having to aim and manage health incentivises you to sit still instead of engaging in the much more fun platforming. There's also basically no use for the for the wall climb.
You have a great character controller, but it feels like it would fit a pure platformer or infinite runner better.
Don't get me wrong, I still had fun, and the level of polish is super impressive a compo game.
I agree a lot with @pdotjpg The movement is absolutely phenomenal and feels really well. The shooting is definitely the weakest part of the game, would be a lot more fair if it shot a projectile toward the direction of the mouse. That way you didn't have to click exactly on them. A benefit of this would be supporting controllers or even a dual sticked arcade machine?
Another great stand out is the multiple levels, I would argue this also turns into a negative as some levels are a lot harder than others (the one with the 3 spinnys comes to mind) I feel that it turns into a shit I got a bad level so I'll just die to have a easier chance at beating my highscore. Maybe make highscores level dependent and you can pick. Or have the level cycle over time. Example you killed all? Move to the next level and keep going.
Also the tutorial seemed better fitting toward a platformer I was shocked at first how different main gameplay was from the tutorial at first, but considering the time constraints its good that you even had time to fit a tutorial in! It does explain how to play and does it well.
Fun and challenging arcade-style game! I really appreciated the tutorial, as that's something a lot of LD games leave out. If you do keep working on it, maybe consider tweaking the physics a bit so it's not so hard to control where you jump. I found myself dying very frequently when I tried to catch the green crosses.
@joe-cowman the physics definitely could use some tweaking I spent little to no time on them and could definitely see why you’d consider this a weaker part of the game
Loved the polish and "juice"! Was quite hard to get a grip on the jumping and it felt punishing right form the start - would love to se a more gradual increase in difficulty. Great job!
@eggsscrambled Nice entry! Love the simplicity of the graphics, you did some nice things using only basic shapes. The 8-bit SFX were fun, and the concept was cool. Loved how there were different random level designs, too. Excellent tutorial as well. My main criticism is that the game is just too difficult. I think the enemies should just damage you, not kill you instantly. This would allow players to experience more of your content. Overall, super solid entry and you should be proud!
My best lol. Sooooo difficult! But super polished. The graphics, the mechanic, wow! So good. It's so hard to hit the enemies however with the attack, like other's have said. I find myself unable to avoid them, get the health, and shoot them altogether at the same time lol. I ALWAYS land in the lava! But this game looks like it was meant to be hard and I feel it. Great job! ~~I'm sort of a masochist when it comes to hard games.~~
