You play as a cat, and your goal is to feed the cat until you've grown from size 100 to 400, as shown on the game's HUD under "Size:".
WASD or Arrows to move. To feed yourself, drag and drop enemies onto the cat. Your grab range can be increased by picking up cat treats that appear randomly on the ground when an enemy has been eaten.
Every 10 seconds, the void in the center of the screen will grow (or reappear if its been destroyed) - you die if it touches you for too long, so you must keep it from growing too large by dragging and dropping enemies onto it, which will shrink it.
You can also die by being shot at by enemies - keep your health high by picking up hearts (also dropped randomly when enemies are eaten).
Other info:
Made for Ludum Dare 51 by myself (programming, music & sfx) and cats#7175 (art).
I think the art style is really cute and the music and sound effects are cool. Grabbing enemies and feeding the cat feels a little wonky but its interesting having to move around and feed the cat at the same time so I think that's super cool. Nice job!
I get this error when trying to run on linux: ``` theo@x:~/Downloads$ java -jar Void\ Cat\!\ -\ LD51.jar WARNING: An illegal reflective access operation has occurred WARNING: Illegal reflective access by org.lwjgl.LWJGLUtil$3 (file:/home/theo/Downloads/Void%20Cat!%20-%20LD51.jar) to method java.lang.ClassLoader.findLibrary(java.lang.String) WARNING: Please consider reporting this to the maintainers of org.lwjgl.LWJGLUtil$3 WARNING: Use --illegal-access=warn to enable warnings of further illegal reflective access operations WARNING: All illegal access operations will be denied in a future release Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-lookup.c: 111: check_match: Assertion `version->filename == NULL || ! _dl_name_match_p (version->filename, map)' failed! ```
VICTORY The graphics are absolutely adorable. I feel kinda bad about chucking all those mushrooms etc into the void, but we do what is necessary to survive.
On Linux had to downgrade to OpenJDK 8 for it to run.
@organicpencil Thanks :) Could you try running the new jar I uploaded under your normal (more recent) java version and let me know if it works? It'd help a lot - I rebuilt it properly and it should work with newer java now (Also send a screenshot if possible, I want to see if the window size is correct)
Very cute, I love all the art! I found it much more fun that I thought, and I really like how you eat enemies. It was fun to grab a bunch of them at once. Great job!
Simple idea but great execution, I had a fun time playing. Maybe, the void should also move? seems like the "meta" was to stay at the sides since you could just grab food from anywhere. Still, well done!
The increasing grab radius is a really good feeling progression-mechanic. I just wish the game had a personalized mouse cursor, since the default windows cursor sort of blends in with the sprites/background. Love the music and the cute cat! Cool game!
Cool idea for a game, kind of wish the theme part of the hole expanding wasn't there, and it was more like a level you wandered through, like Katamari but with enemies. Had a fun time playing it though! The art and music were really really nice.
Fun and interesting game, though not very challenging. I like how progress goes faster later in the level. Graphical style is cute. I think it would look even better if the characters had drop shadows.

Took a few tries to figure it out. It's really satisfying how the grab radius increases as you go :D
The game itself plays well, and I didn't notice any bugs. It's a fun little experience!
