I had a lot of fun making this one. Working within the constraints of the Apple II was perfect for a game jam. I kind of want to make more games like this, even though I was a Commodore user back in the day. =)
My favorite part was using Beepbox to make the intentionally bad square-wave music.
I used balanced randomness (essentially a recyclable "deck" of random numbers), so while it's very random, it's not too unfair.
I did a post-compo update to fix a couple of bugs and adjust the difficulty so that you can experience more of the game on a single run.
Things I had to punt on, and might add in the future: - family members/companions - showing ammo etc in battle mode - getting caught cheating at gambling - full-screen illustrations with lots of dithering - inputting your trucker name - tombstone with epitaph when you die - smaller illustrations for the diner, etc.
Awesome game! You really captured the style of the classic Oregon Trail quite well. (I chuckled at your comment in the description about the square-wave music, it was a bit gnarly haha)
I loved the gameplay and the retro aesthetics, especially the pixelart was really really good! I will say, the truck drive sound was reeeaalllly repetitive and hard to listen to, I had to mute the game after a while. Nevertheless, great job!
Super polished game!. 20 years of jams really shows. I laughed at the silly names of the gangs. I cant believe im saying this, but I probably should have gambled more at the camps since I ran out of money pretty fast lol.

➖ The game froze after I tried ignoring the hitch hiker. I was right near the end which was kind of annoying :(
I enjoyed the mood of this one... hated that I forgot to buy fuel. One thing I noticed when I was attacked ... my browser follow the up/down keys... which took a little out of that encounter. Aside from that .. good entry 👍🏻
@frosty that would be the newest chrome... but I think it might come down to an issue with the resolution. You be able to tell which resolution it was from the screenshot... mine says 1132x703 on the file... so I think that would be relatively close to the correct one.
Really fun game, good writing and mood, and it runs perfectly smoothly. If anything, maybe more diversity in encounters could be a plus to shake things up a bit.
Its so hard to not get annoyed at some of the choices 😂 nothing to do with you! I mean like I went to visit the doctor and he botched the operation 😂 like dude!! 😂

Really impressed by how authentic and complete this little homage feels. And love all the funny touches - like the biker gang names. Great fun and a great entry! An inspiration to keep jammin' for life
Really nice concept and homage. Initially I felt like it was a bit easier than I expected given the reference to the original but then it ramped up. Great reto feel and style!
