With love from the team:

𝑯𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒐 π’‡π’“π’Šπ’†π’π’…π’”*!!!* We're absolutely buzzing to share our wild ride at the amazing Ludum Dare 55 game jam! It was an epic chance to check out some stellar games and toss our own hat into the ring. We whipped up a simple prototype and didn’t quite hit all our lofty goals, but hey, we’re seriously stoked about the cool concept we started with and can't wait to dive deeper into its development.

Our little brainchild, "Grimoire", takes a crack at the theme "Summoning", mixing up κ‚΅κŒ¦κ‡™κ“„κ’κ‰”κ‹¬κ’’ vibes with some fresh mechanics. Picture a world where RTS meets Roguelike, sounds awesome, right? Well, pump the brakes because we’re not quite there yet. But someday? You bet! We know our game’s mechanics are still baby steps, but the promise they hold? Absolutely thrilling.

Right now, "Grimoire" is just a baby prototype, but it’s the seed we’re nurturing into something grand. We’re all in to level up its gameplay, pile on the features, and polish up the experience to truly unlock what it can become.

We can’t wait to transform "Grimoire" into something super magical, and we hope you’re as excited to delve into its secrets as we are in crafting them. Your support and insights mean the world to us, and a massive thank you to everyone playing and reviewing our game.

Join us on this magical quest to unfold the limitless potential of "Grimoire"!

GRIMOIRE beckons those daring to harness its ancient magic, blending RTS and Roguelike elements where destiny unfolds with each encounter. This tome of power, destined for the hands of the brave or foolish, awaits a true master to unlock its secrets.

As an aspiring mage, you find this relic and discover its ability to breathe life into beings. In moments of reprieve, known as the Calm, you must quickly inscribe arcane words to summon soldiers, conjure mana, and fortify your forces.

But you are not alone in your quest. Rival mages, driven by ambition, challenge you, sparking the Clash where your strategic decisions meet magical confrontations. Your summoned minions march autonomously towards enemy thrones, their traits as varied as the stars.

Your goal is to prove your worth through battle, establishing yourself as the rightful bearer of the Grimoire. Failure means passing the mantle to another, potentially relegating you to a mere footnote in the saga of the true Chosen.

This game of power and deception questions if defeat signifies you were not meant to be the Chosen. The saga of the Grimoire continues, its pages still open for those brave enough to write their destiny. Will you be the master, or fade into obscurity?

Will you prove to be the true Chosen, or will the Grimoire find it's way to another?

I like the word-based Age of War game style! Unfortunately I ran into a number of bugs with certain units acting invulnerable, units stopping to attack invisible units or simply stopping permanently, units simply passing right by other units, and words overlapping in the book stage making them impossible to read. In the end I was able to get the enemy down to three hearts but had to leave with all three lanes locked up, which I will still consider a win.

EDIT: whoops thought this was an LD57 game, not sure why it showed up in the list.

The game definitely needs a tutorial or some in game instructions explaining how it works. My first attempt to play was very confusing and I thought it was just broken. Pressing enter on the book screen did nothing, and then the fight started but nothing happened for like a minute until a little spider creature moved across the screen at the end which resulted in...nothing. I think most people are going to have that kind of experience when they first play your game if you don't explicitly tell them what they have to do.

When I realized I had to type out the spells it started to make sense, but clicking to spawn a creature takes a few seconds for anything to happen, and watching your creature cross into the enemy territory but NOT visually do any damage just made the whole thing feel really unresponsive and unsatisfying.

It's a cool idea, but without more feedback for the player it just feels too undercooked.

Aaaaand I just realized that the ludum dare page glitched out and showed me games from LD 55 instead of LD 59 lmao. So if you're confused as to why your 2 year old jam game got a review, thats why.

I was also brought here by a glitch in LD59. But while I am here -- really cool concept! Have you ended up going further with it?
