Butterfly

Testing multi player is hard, I can't see how to join a game with someone?
I kept getting Nibbler style stages, repeating. Are there other game parts?

Also, half that info seems to be a Chrome ad. Friends don't let friends use Google :)

@endurion, thank you for testing. When using the play button you are automatically joined to the world. Every connection to this world is visible. Only the part where you make butterflies is private.

Controls feel a bit weird on desktop with mouse but I assume the game is intended for touch screens? Otherwise I enjoyed playing it.

@thejackimonster : you can use keyboard arrow keys to move and use Enter key for dialogscreen. But you can play the game on a mobile device!

A simple game that fits the theme well. The character’s design is nice, but the world could have been a bit larger (and the butterflies much smaller) to really give the feeling of searching. The introduction of the snake mini-game is a good idea to add some gameplay variety.

A simple concept and extremely bold to try and implement multiplayer into an LD game. Respect for giving it a go.

@indigowolf : thank you for commenting .. I didn't know if you were the player I played against just now. That made the game 100% nicer. It was just so much fun grabbing the butterfly before you. And it actually felt good as well when the other player grabbed one from me!!!!

Interesting concept. The music was funny and the minigames were actually quite stimulating after a while. Clever stuff!

@cogcomp : propably that was you that was playing together with me. You got a few butterflies before I did, but I got some ' of yours ' .. ha ha .. This was actually why I made the game. To be able to play together/against others online.. that is so much more fun than playing alone :D :D :D Thank you for playing and the nice comments!

The music is so epic... I'll try to make something similar at the next jam!

I swear, it felt like staring into the abyss. Little bushes, blades of grass, a caterpillar — and then I pressed the sound button… Mother of God, both literally and figuratively. Then I clicked on the caterpillar and it started eating leaves, after which a butterfly appeared and the boy shouted “Yippee!!!!” — which, together with the music, had a mind-blowing effect on my psyche. Then I went back to the caterpillar and somehow ended up eating my own tail. And then there were butterflies. They were everywhere. The whole screen was butterflies. That’s when I broke. It was too sacred an experience — my soul wasn’t ready for this :D
But overall — thank you for the game, really. It’s one of those cases where you feel like the work is trying to tell you even more than the author originally intended.

I don’t understand why you weren’t nominated for sound — I’d honestly give 5 stars for the music alone.

Hi @avhatar . I have opted out of the music since I used the google blob opera program to generate the music. And officially that is considered AI and not particularly composed by myself allthough I moved the sound up-down .. it is technically not composed by myself. But I thank you for your nice words.

I couldn't test it with friends - but it was nice little game!

I would try to make the movement more fluid and less tile base when controllign the person, and also try to hide the seams between the snake parts

The music is really surreal lol, no wonder AI created it. Together with the unique graphics it really creates a nice mood. Well done!

The art style is lovely with a playful, childlike charm. I can tell you put a lot of heart into the visuals! Adding multiplayer support in just two days is great! Keep up!

Congrats for making a multiplayer game for the compo, that's quite a feat itself. Unfortunately I had no one joining with me when I played your game. Collecting the butterflies is pretty straightforward and the snake minigame is fun. I actually spent more time in the minigame than the actual game :smile:
The urge to collect the butterflies is quite missing, though. It would have been a good idea to have something in the game that rewards when you collect the butterflies, otherwise it becomes pretty pointless after a while.

@tanis: completely agree with all your points. Thank you for playing. I've found this game most enjoyable by playing with others. Than there is a 'race' to the butterflies and strategy of who is doing the minigame to spawn more butterflies. Again, thank you for your nice words and good points!
