Ludum Dare #60compo
Bumper Cars Guy
Bumper cars are old tech, aren't they? We all rode them when we were kids, so they must be.
But here you are not riding a car. You are the poor guy who risks his life dodging cars and jumping into them to help kids steer away from jams and get unstuck.
So that's your goal: make sure KIDS HAVE FUN! Which means they want to drive fast and bump into other cars. If they get stuck they'll get bored. And if kids are bored... YOU'LL BE FIRED! Get unused cars out of the way and jump into cars with kids to help them get unstuck from jams!
HOW TO PLAY:
Move: arrows
Jump: z/x
Jump into cars to drive them.
KEEP THE FUN ROLLING!
It was great going back to old good Lua programming, no AI involved. I still feel joy producing my own code in game jams, the same way one feels joy solving a Sudoku or a crossword :D

Fortunately files do show when they were updated, hopefully it's proof that I did it on time X)
Fortunately I can help the kids with their cars, but this is still challenging
Well done, it's a fun and cute entry!
@baturinsky Yes, I fear I relied too much on our own experience riding bumper cars. Frustration when you got stuck and couldn't get out of a large jam, mainly ^⁻^
It could be interesting to see each individual kids happiness than the aggregate too, I was trying to get around to each of them. It was a bit tricky sometimes to get in the cart I wanted to. I wonder if I needed a second objective, like to go stop/start the ride power between waves too or something? I can see myself coming back to try and beat my high score of 240.
Really fun to play and I actually also spent a bit of time purely playing around by dodging the car and collecting coins. Really nice pico8 style and partical effects. Great job without AI!!!
I do like how the game is based entirely around preventing the other bumper karts from ending up in jams so to speak. Cool and readable art as well.
However, I'm not really a fan of how the approval meter continues to decrease when new kids are taking up the cart. Kinda wished that the meter was paused during this moment since there didn't seem to be anything I could do in those moments. I also felt that the game itself could've used maybe another element to it ? As an example, the player getting bumped around was funny, but it also could've used some sort of penalty to it maybe ? Or on the flipside, maybe getting hit would cause the kid's approval to increase ? Just an idea really lol.
All that said, this is still a fun little arcade game. Good stuff.
