*It's possible that whilst waiting for The Pitt S3, I've watched too much ER and that's why this game got made*
It's a busy shift at this hospital but luckily you have your trusty pager to help steer you to the patients who need it most.
You will get bleeped with an EXTENSION + CODE, the extension tells you where to go and the code is how serious the situation is. Critical codes must be handled asap or you lose!
- You can miss 3 normal codes before failing - Patients are in the green beds (you just need to get next to them) - You can check your messages at the red phones which give more info so you can learn the extensions and codes
Tragically this hospital can only ever afford to have a singular bed's number in each room so some figuring out is required
Controls
- WASD/Keys + mouse look to move around - SPACE to open pager to check codes, SPACE again to cycle through the bleeps - P to PAUSE
Keys can be rebound in the Options page
Message times can be adjusted and Audio adjusted in the Options page and Pause menu
Stack used
- Godot: using my godot-3d-template, only has a Fade addon but a grab bag of code from previous jams - Claude Code: No vibe cobing or auto-complete, used as a learning + docs tool and for debugging / refactoring - Logic Pro: I've graduated to Logic this year for making background music and SFX (although sfxr will always be used for quick effects!) - Tiny bit of Asesprite and VS Code usage
I've been practising building little bits in 3D with Godot and this is my first time attempting a 3D game for a jam
Had loads of fun building this one and have learnt so much, also tried some stuff I've not done with the music track and well, mixed feelings but both turned out better than I hoped 😅
Next year: Blender or bust!
Known issues: there are some spikes of lag when shaders are compiled on-the-fly in the web build. Apologies, the game will get going again after you give it a moment. Post jam fix has been attempted but it's not perfect.
It was super fun to keep in mind all these medical rooms and run around them! Also I like how you made the main character and running animation for him. Seems like you didn't have enough time to complete the whole location but still it is really nice game, good job!
I saw this game recommended in the comments and decided to try it. I really shouldn’t be allowed near games like this, because I spent countless months playing Theme Hospital years ago. I instantly love anything with that vibe.
It’s really fun running around and getting tasks on a pager. From the first second, you feel like a doctor in a hospital, constantly busy, with so much to do and everything depending on you. I loved that feeling.
Thanks for the Dem Hospital nostalgia. If you managed to make this over a weekend, that’s really impressive.
It's very annoying to play because without memorizing all the codes, the pager only gives you the info "message", and you have to go to the red phone to check where you should actually go.
this game could have used a bit more explaining, but it really gets you into that stress level and finding your way pattern after a while. Maybe a starting tour or maps somewhere at the wall would have been fair. Well done.
@kedikat Thanks! Yup, I was learning about the shader compilation at the end when I noticed a bad lag spike, I took care of that one by dropping the shader that was getting built on the fly, I didn't realise others were still happening but all new to me there so appreciate the tip and I'll investigate how to do properly
@beareye Thank you, I was pretty happy with the janky run in the end, haven't learnt any rigging yet so just some old school rotations around pivot points. I suspect the jank made it quirkier so probs for the best. Yes, usual triage of deciding what to get done so left the X-Ray department a bit bare but I also wanted to keep a full run short so didn't need more locations.
@gamescodedogs Interesting, I haven't heard of Dem hospital and struggling to find it, any hints for a search? I'm intrigued. Thanks for playing either way! If you want, I did upload the source code and repo so you can see how I built it over the jam timeline.
@mikoolec Thanks for giving it a go 😄 I appreciate that's a bit of of a challenge but it was the game loop of using an old piece of tech I was going for. I thought doctors would learn extensions and codes so they wouldn't need to check messages as much, especillay with a critical code where they might just head to the location asap
@johncoffee Cheers! I agree, a bit more of a tutorial at the start would be nice to add, really help the player. Mixed feelings about a map, I considered it but kind of wanted the game loop to be a little tough like that, you have to explore, check the signs and figure it out but perhaps it would have been nice to find on a wall around the corner like you suggested 🙂 or more localised ones rather than the arrow signs.
a hospital shift run through a pager is such a clever interface, the extension and code system makes every bleep feel urgent without needing a big tutorial. the little people in the beds are a charming detail too, it makes the ward feel alive. did you tune the critical codes by hand, or let the difficulty ramp on its own? really fun concept.
@gamescodedogs Ah ofc, I do kind of wish I had either made isometric or top down view rather than 3rd person tbh, I considered it but wanted a fast feeling game. Something for me to experiment with. Now if I could start making graphics like Two Point Hospital I'd be cooking.
