Ludum Dare #60compo
Reinvent the Wheel
The wheel: a piece of technology so old, yet so perfect that it hasn't needed any changes throughout the annals of history. Have you ever wondered how such a creation would hold up against an army of various polyhedra? Ever wanted to assert your dominance over inferior shapes, in glorious 3D? Well, here you go anyway!
Take this game for a spin, I hope you have a wheely fun time!
- WASD - Move. Hold W to spin the wheel, and use A/D to turn. Camera direction matters, point it the direction you want to go
- SPACE - Jump
- SHIFT (while in the air) - Ground Pound
- HOLD AND RELEASE LEFT CLICK - Dash Attack. Charge for longer to dash faster.
- ESC or P - Pause
- Kill enemies to gain XP and upgrade your skills. Upgrade the XP multiplier to level up faster.
- Keep spinning fast to stay stable! Speed and Stability are also upgradeable skills. If you fall over on your side, you lose.
- There are two ways to kill enemies: attack until their health goes to 0 (upgrade Damage to hit harder), or knock them out of bounds (upgrade Knockback to send them flying).
- Prepare for the boss! The game ends when you kill the boss, who appears once you reach level 20. He has a lot of health and is very heavy.
- Godot
- FL Studio for music and sound effects
- Blender
- Paint.NET
- Made a fix to shader pre-compilation just after the compo deadline. Not a gameplay feature. Might reduce stuttering?
- Selected wheel skin is no longer reset when playing again
- Fixed a bug where the camera would sometimes zoom in on the player
- Added volume controls
- Improved game over condition
- Added visual health indicator
- Player takes damage while grounded on their side
- Player heals while upright, on the ground, and moving with at least 5 speed
- Added customizable settings to stop players accidentally selecting upgrades too fast
- Added jump buffering
- Added in-game movement and combat tutorial
- Added difficulty settings
- Removed shader precompilation. Just couldn't really get it working, I'll give it a try another time
- Improved enemy movement, added cone enemy type
- Enemies no longer follow the player out of bounds to their death
- Pyramids will now fire 3 shots then reposition to keep their distance from the player
- Cones will keep their distance and charge towards the player
- Cones are vulnerable for a short time after charging. Hit them with an attack while the blue circle is visible to send them flying. (Kind of a "perfect parry" instant kill)
- Added attack cooldowns and cancel windows
- Dash now must be charged for a minimum amount of time in order to activate. (No more spamming dash)
- The speed you move when dashing is faster overall. Increases with more charge time and speed upgrades.
- Added more sound effects
- Player attacks, healing, cone perfect parry, tutorial markers

!> the peak of wheel stability design!
@gevernus I should have included an in-game tutorial. Always be moving fast, upgrade speed and stability. Also jumping can sometimes help re-stabilize. Sharp turns and attacks from bad positions can put you off balance. It's designed to be a bit of a balancing act, like riding a bike/unicycle.
@mugule There is a "boss" at level 20, which ends the game if you kill it. But yeah, the game is largely just about staying alive and becoming more powerful.
@alextrash Glad you liked it!
@khaotom Haha I'm glad you got that, that's the exact reason I chose it as the boss. To be the best, you gotta beat the best.
I chose the iron-rimmed spoked wheel since that was the fastest one, and was able to beat the game dying only 3 times or so at the start.
