*In the deep of the woods... You will find the mysterious Tetería.*
Controls: WASD / Arrow keys (move) Space / Enter (interact)
WARNING: THERE IS A SUDDEN LOUD SOUND IN GAME!!!
Made for COMPO in 1.5 days, completed in the literal last minutes (I don't even know how I finished it, last hour or two my hands were typing and doing everything by themselves, it's a miracle the build seems to be working fine)
The theme Old Tech is represented in the Samovar itself (old "machine" to boil water and make tea, usually fueled by pinecones), in the visuals (I used a lot of "assests" drawn on paper, which was super fun, and combined with pixel art on the computer), in the fairies (their names are references to old jewelry techniques, one of which was lost to time, and their visual designs represent those techniques). The fairies are also a nod to my other concept I decided to discard in favour of this one!
In this game, you will brew tea that can predict future... Or does it, in fact, influence it?
*Collect the pinecones to boil the water*
*Create a magic spell*
*Choose an herb or root for the tea*
*And uncover their future!*

eng: Such a cute game! If only I could draw half as well as you, my own game would be so much better. I especially love the poems at the end. You can really feel how much heart and soul went into this game. ❤️
Translation for others: Thank you! It makes me very happy, because I always feel like my drawing skills aren't good enough :) Your game also looks very pretty, I will bookmark it to play later! And thank you for the instruction, I tried exporting like it says, with the index name, and it went better because at least it started loading on my page, but midway it gave an error anyway =\
This was again a pretty hand-drawn game, which I have come to expect from you! It felt very mystical and whimsical. I especially liked the poetry that appeared when you made a prediction! And the voice acting made it even better. Did you write it yourself? The art of the flowers was also really pretty ^^
I guess the only thing I would have loved is for my choices to be a bit more interesting. I am guessing that whenever you choose a flower, it has an effect on the outcome? Maybe you could give a hint to the outcome, so I can make a decision about what I think will happen (which might be wrong of course :p ).
Either way, really well done! And congrats on finishing another compo game! ^^
@ntmalichi The web build seems to be working now! I tested it two times and besides the ugly gray screen when transitioning between the scenes it seems to be fine :)
@sanechekz@ancooper Thank you guys, I tried again and it worked even though I didn't change anything in the export settings :D / Спасибо за советы, теперь всё сработало, хотя я ничего в окне экспортирования не поменяла :)
Cute little experience! I loved the hand drawn visuals. I'm not sure I understood how to select the final ingredient for the teas but I guess I lucked out 3/3 haha.
I wrote the poems on my way home from the Spanish class, in the notes on my phone xD And recorded VO later at home.
And the flowers I drew with pixels in Paint Tool SAI, then zoomed in 200%, took a screenshot, cut the white around and used the zoomed in flower as a png :') I am glad you like them, I was drawing the flowers on Sunday evening already feeling like I might not do everything in time xD I really wanted to finish it in time for COMPO, so it's not super polished.
And yes, the flower decides the outcome, as I didn't want to overcomplicate this (at first I wanted to do 3 flowers for each client ^^') and in my head the type of "flower" is a hint in itself, but I admit that might only make sense to me?
For example, the hare (Liebrita) has 2 choices: camomile (I used Latin instead of English, but I hope the plants are recognizable) and the fern's flower. Camomile is used for calming teas, so it stands to reason it gives you a chill "you rest all winter with tea and books" ending. Fern's flower, on the other hand, is a mythical flower of the legends that doesn't actually exist in the real world... So it gives you the magical ending. Or with Orsita (bear), the Rose gives you the Prince (direct fairy tale connection in my head). With Ratita (mouse) the choice is way harder to realize if you don't know Russian, but the pea on the left is called "Mice's pea" in Russian, so in my mind it makes it a "magical" component of this equation and so gives her a victory in the pie contest, where ivan-chai feels more "homey" (and was commonly used here and still kinda used to make tea!)
And yeah I wish the transitions were smoother and it would be great to have maybe a screen saying "you chose THIS ingredient, and so you get THIS ending", hopefully next time my plan is less ambitious and I will be able to polish my entry more :')
And again, thank you!! Can't wait to play your game too, I am feeling rested today so going to finally start going around and playing others' games!
@hagamosvideojuegos Ahh, thank you! And I think I managed not to make it creepy this time around! :) And I also love oolong a lot ^v^ To be honest, I wanted to include English and Spanish translations for all the herbs, but I didn't see them for some in Wiki and didn't have time anymore to research thoroughly ;_; Most of the herbs I used are the ones growing in my countryside so it makes sense they might not be commonly known in other countries/areas!
Always nice to see your unique art style again! The graphics are adorable and also great work on the audio! My only complaint is that the sounds vary a lot in volume, maybe their volumes could be adjusted a little better. But still great game!
the hand-drawn paper art is gorgeous, it gives the whole tea house such a warm storybook feel and the samovar as the old tech centerpiece is a really clever pick. i can't believe this was made in a day and a half, it feels way more complete than that. did you scan the paper drawings and clean them up, or draw them digitally in that style? either way, really charming little game.
I can't believe myself I managed to complete it. I drew all 6 endings in 30 minutes exactly (yes, I timed myself because I was running out of time), for example. And I finished the coding in the literal last hour typing away like a robot, it's a miracle I didn't mess anything up in the code! Honestly I am glad you feel like it's complete, I didn't have time to polish it at all, audio levels are wonky and I couldn't do proper transitions and I wanted the fairy to leave a trail in the Spell Levels xD
Thankfully, drawing on paper is actually faster (for me at least) than on computer. I don't have a scaner, so I took photos with my phone and then downloaded them on my laptop; I didn't really clean them in any way, just downsized and cut out if necessary (for BGs just downsized) and adjusted the colours a bit (interestingly you don't even need to add a colour, if you up the saturation it just appears by itself! I only put a colour layer over the cafe BG :))
The title of the game is also drawn on paper! I used black pen for it. And then some assets I drew on my graphic tablet in Paint Tool SAI to contrast "magical" part of the world with the "regular one" ^^
And yes I felt so exhausted that yesterday, after jam, I just couldn't do anything at all. Can't recommend crunching like that xD
Wow! What an amazing and unique creation. It's so whimsical and it oozes creativity. You can really tell that a lot of love went into this project. I love how you mixed the photographed drawings with digital art and the usage of recorded auido and music. This really is a piece of art!
@shlolo Thank you so much, your words make me very happy :) I did put a lot of love and care in it for sure, and I am glad it translates! It was super fun playing around with paper drawings, and after I cut out the figurines of the "clients" I kept them on my desk to motivate me while finishing the game, and it feels nice to have something physical left from working on the game too ^^
@drgcandle Hello! Sorry, I don't trust auto translators and I can't really check how they translate to Chinese... But I'll write in English because I think it will translate better (than from Russian). Hopefully you don't mind! I am glad to see you again, it's been a while; I'll make sure to check out your game too! I always enjoy the more artistic parts of working on the game, and writing poetry is always fun, and drawing on paper is a different experience from drawing on computer, it is especially enjoyable! I am glad you liked the game and the atmosphere and the story, thank you
Hi again! Finally I got to sit down with your game as well. And I actually love it. In fact, your entry is a great example of what matters in Ludum Dare, at least for me. Your game has a soul, a uniqueness, a feel that can only be attributed to your individual persona. It's this fun mix of weird & creative, and *exactly* what I want to see from a Ludum Dare entry. And the length is just right for a replay.
I was surprised to read on how much thought you've put into the process as well, just reading through your comments (I got the cozy ending at first). I am completely oblivious to the different types of flowers and I selected them somewhat at random - only after reading your comment above I realized I'm missing out on the meaning. I enjoyed your drawings (always fun to see mixed-medium games), and the audio is superb. The male voice was pretty authentic to me! :)
I actually don't have anything critical to say other than about adjusting the audio levels. I enjoyed the experience a lot. Thank you, and congrats - it's an awesome entry...
...and you are an awesome person - again, thanks a lot for the support on discord. You spoke the words I needed, when I needed them, and opened my mind to a possibility ("meditative") I hadn't considered before. Maybe simple, but that encouragement means a lot to me.
Thank you for your kind words! I'll admit your comment made me tear up a little. It feels so heartwarming, and I am so glad my words had such a great effect! This part of Ludum Dare is what matters to me a lot - connecting with others, it is always a special experience, and a great motivator for me to participate even when I feel like I won't have enough time to make a game (like this time; though I still managed to complete it!!) - because I really want to enjoy that cultural-social exchange; we are all gathered here to play each other's games and have fun, and I am glad you didn't miss out and ended up publishing your game (and I really enjoyed playing it!)
And I am glad you enjoyed my game too ^v^ I had a lot of fun making it! (overworked myself for sure but it was all worth it) I lowered the "pitch" for the male voice and I am happy to hear it feels right (because I still recognize my own voice it feels a bit weird to me x)) But I liked how it sounded - like an old man - as I pictured a wise grandpa telling this "intro" story.
Thank you for leaving such a thoughtful comment, it meant a lot to me!
Some of the voices were unsettling, but I think it added a sense of mystery rather than just being spooky!
Many of those plants can also be found in Spain, for instance, my own parents have roses in their garden bed.
While some might be less common here, for those of us not from that region, they carry an exotic touch; it’s much like blue tea, which originates from China but is now available just about anywhere.
In any case, you’ve managed to craft a compelling narrative experience—something I personally find difficult and tend to avoid, as it’s quite a challenge to pull off in such a short amount of time. And the fact that you’ve created two distinct endings for each character is simply impressive!
Haha well I am sure roses are known everywhere! xD But something like ivan-chai, for example, I didn't see a Spanish wiki page for and I was already in a rush by then ;_; And I wanted to be sure I use the right word, not just pick whatever the dictionary tells me; now that I look into it, it might be adelfilla? But I am not 100% sure. Seems right from google photos though!
I remember when I visited Spain for longer periods of time, it was hard to find tea-tea, most of the shops had herbal teas only (at least in Valencia region); I wonder if it's different depending on the area! But I got the impression you guys prefer herbal teas :D
And I am glad the narrative experience works! Honestly we are the opposite in this regard, I find narrative part to be easier to tackle, it's programming and stuff like that that is difficult to me... Though I have to confess I actually do like coding! It definitely can be creative as well, and I find it fun! But obviously it's not my strength :)) Makes me happy to see appreciation of the narrative part that is more of my strength, thank you!
Huge congratulations on pulling this project off under such intense time pressure! The way you established the deep woods setting gives Teteria a really compelling sense of mystery. What a fantastic entry for the jam!
I love the creativity of this entry - the fact that graphics and even audio comes from the tangible world eleveates the entry. Big congratulations on this and it sounds like you felt time crunch.
Oh this one's got that kantiny vibe , really love the art style! I was wondering if the plant choice would affect things, so I played the first level several times (I like to pick apart games, sorry hihi)
At the 'create spell minigame' I first though I needed to keep between the lines, so I was super careful. Then after half the spell I found out it has got some virtual guard rails, which made it much easier. I'm a bit divided which version I found more fun to play though 🤔
_(just thinking out loud here) Maybe the player could mess up and the spell will do something aweful? But then the whole cozy vibe would be shattered and then it would become cozy horror_ 🤔
... I think you made the right choice here 😁
Edit: now I remember! You actually did it! You included Spanish! 😄
Very nice entry! I really liked the hand drawn graphics, the sound effects and voice over. The little prophecies makes you want to explore this world, and it would be nice to have little peek at what the characters do afterwards
@wouter52 Just saw the P.S. you made, I read your comment too soon at first xD It's not a lot but yes, I did!! In fact I had my notebook with the game plans open during the Spanish class and was jotting down ideas in every possible moment... I don't think anyone noticed xD the funny thing is because my brain was taking in Spanish, but it's natively russian and also has English ingrained in it, my game plans ended up written in the wild mix of all three languages 😂 my sister laughed afterwards when she was reading them and saw a single sentence including all three in it 😂

Like most of your creations, and I think that gives it a real sense of character! 😄
I found it artistically interesting, and as a bit of a fun fact, blue tea (oolong) is my favourite!
Finally, you’ve included words in Spanish, English and Russian... very interesting! I’ll have to learn to read Cyrillic at some point!
Well done!
