Vitruvian Machine

Flick through Leonardo da Vinci's notebook and see how technology has advanced throughout history. Use this knowledge to build machines to complete tasks for the very people that invented that technology.

Generative AI Disclaimer
I hate generative AI. It has taken so many things I loved and replaced it with infinite slop. It has taken my love of game development, and soon it will probably take my job. I’ve hoped for years that it’s all going to collapse, and that writing code will be a valuable skill again, but every day I believe that less and less. Every time I sit down to code I’m filled with a deep despair and drained of all my energy. Is this really the future? Vibe coding wins? It’s such a depressing future.

TL;DR: All the code in this entry was written by Claude, I did the art and design

Love the idea of building wacky vehicles piloted by the Vitruvian Man. Very silly but well executed game. :)

The integration of the historical knowledge from the notebooks into the building process is really smart. It gives the act of constructing these advanced machines a satisfying sense of purpose, making the entire concept come together wonderfully.

Fun game! The levels are well built and interesting. Cool idea to follow the advancement of tech.

About AI, idk why you use it in your spare time if you already hate it at work already. It's also still possible to never use it at all even at work (unless mandatory in your team), I never use it and it's just fine.

Super fun game and excellent art! I really enjoyed how you connected the different inventors to the parts! Great submission!

I'd say you put together a pretty good game for one who has lost their love of game development. I also echo @yorsh's sentiment, if you don't like it then don't use it if possible, which is certainly the case for LD. But I understand being disheartened by it, it's a disruptive tool.

On the game: I liked the amount of character gotten out of just a sketch and a line of dialogue on each Challenge. Some of them I found a bit annoying with the lack of control (the pizza level in particular) but that's basically the challenge and charm of these sorts of modular physics games.

@yorsh @nathmate unfortunately at my job it's been pushed onto me to the point where I have no choice, I don't write code any more it's just 100% AI. This ldjam was kinda a test to see if I could make up for the lack of motivation by using the same tools I use every day at work. But the whole thing was such a joyless experience, and most days I struggled to even get out of bed let alone work on this jam.

I don't know that I want to do it again, but then that might mean just giving up on game dev entirely, and I'm not sure I want to do that either. I think the thing I submitted feels pretty fun, but it hardly feels like it's mine, so don't feel very good about that either.
