Disclaimer: I started to make the source code for this game when the theme for Mini LD 62 was announced, because I saw that the jam would take place during my University Welcome week. What's more, I was moving house as well over the weekend, so I knew that finding time to make this would be difficult, so I gave myself a head start. I just really wanted to take place in this jam, because I had some great ideas for a game setting. Just as I suspected, I didn't have much time to finish it, so the player is still a stick man, the background art isn't mine, the tutorial is awful, different save files don't do anything, the boss only has two attack patterns and nothing exciting happens when you defeat him. Though I do like to think the presentation is pretty solid.
TL;DR: Game isn't completely finished because of university, but still functional.
The game takes place at the end, because it's the final boss. That's why you start the game from the Load Game option in the main menu. The save files were going to act as difficulty, but I ran out of time. If it were a full game, it'd be a Metroidvania, which is why you have many abilities that can seem a bit OP (like a double jump that is also an attack). The game takes place in the Magus universe, early in its history.
You play as Victor Martim, a demon hunter who's village was burned down by the Greater Demons, a clan of elite demons created by the now destroyed Patrem Dolor. You have come far on your travels; The Bailiff, The Prosecutor, The Convict and The Undertaker have all been destroyed on your rampage for revenge. All that remains now is the one whom controls them all, a being who can see through the fourth dimension, has been watching you ever second on your travels: The Jury.
Made in GameMaker: Studio. Source code is included with the download. This source code is actually pretty clean and well made, though a few areas are messy.
WASD: Move
K: Attack
O: Throw knife
P: Jump
Space: Skip text
Escape: Close game
F: Toggle fullscreen
F1: Restart game
F2: Restart room (recommended you do not press)
F5: Open debug screen (most of the debug keys have been disabled)
Known bugs:
+ There is a bug sometimes caused by walljumping into another wall where the player will get stuck inside the bricks (seems to happen most commonly in the left room). Press F1 to restart.
+ Pressing F2 duplicates music tracks.
+ If you die to the boss and go back to fight him, he will not fight back. Again, F1 will fix this.
Tips for killing the boss:
I recommend you at least try to defeat him yourself first before reading these.
+ Dodge rolling is your friend.
+ So are knives being thrown upward.
+ Double jump onto the side walls, walljump off then do another double jump straight into him to damage him. Throw a knife for good measure.
+ Lasers aim for the player when spawned and when they bounce for the first time. Time a jump so the laser bounces upward so it does crawl along the ground towards you.
