The wizard's lost hats

Hi there. Runs okay but no idea how to do anything except move. Tried various keyboard and mouse but couldn't get out of first room.

I didn't understand what I'm supposed to do, how to pick up items (and what/where they are) or exit the first room. Some characters appeared and I killed them but not sure why.
