Humans Need Space

A game made by @Ayxs (*Programming, UI, A bit of art, SFX*) and @Bredera (*Art, Music, Story, A bit of programming, SFX*) for the Ludum Dare 42 jam, based around the theme: Running out of space.

Story
It is the year 2018 and the world population is around 7 Billion humans, it is estimated that the Earth will perish when 10 Billion humans will inhabit the Earth.

You are a young astronaut and biologist, and you want to save the Earth by transferring them to other planets within the universe! Use *conventional* and *unconventional* ways to help you save the Earth!

For this feat you will be remembered!

Controls
- __W A S D__ : Move your character around.
- __CTRL__ : Pick up people from Planets.
- __TAB__ : Open the overview .
- __MOUSE__ : Use the mouse to select planets and actions.
- __LMB__ : Select Actions (obviously...).

Goal of the game

SAVE THE EARTH FROM OVERPOPULATION!

How?
- Use your own space ship to carry over people from earth to another planet and use your spaceship to discover new planets
- Use the actions available to you

Actions available

- Transport Ship : Using this a portion of the people on earth will be sent via transport ship to the selected planet

- Ballistic Missile : Using this will sent a missile to the selected planet and destroy it and its inhabitants, after some time a new uninhabited planet will spawn in.

Tutorial
- In the Main Menu there is a complete tutorial explaining all the controls and the objectives of the game in full detail.

Enjoy

@Ayxs and myself (@Bredera) hope that you all will enjoy the game! We had a blast making this game and for our first 2D game ever made we are extremely proud of the end result.

If there are any bugs or improvements to be made let us know!

Give it a go if you want!

Screenshots

_(If there are __any__ problems concerning the download please let us know, we will try to fix them. We didn't get to test the OS X and Linux version of the game....)_

Changelog

__V1.1__
- Fixed the Story sprites at the beginning of the game to no longer be cropped out on smaller monitors.
- Increased the movement speed of the player, this should now also be equal on all frame rates (stupidly forgot to make it framrate independent...)
- Uploaded .zip files instead of .rar files for better accesability across all platforms.

Fun game with great BGM and SFX

I really like it, like, a lot. the only problem I have is that the ship moves a bit slow but all the rest is great! Great job!

Got to about year 2123 on my fifth playthrough, the first four I was just trying to pick up people and put them down. I reached a point where there were no planets to transport to (only one planet respawned in time). I enjoyed the graphics and the flow of the spaceship movement, and cool little tunes too. Also noticed the UI persists after a planet is blown up by the rocket - and you can keen firing rockets at it. :)

Very cool concept, like the filter and artstyle :)

Whats's better than sending a transport ship full of people to a distant planet, and then send nuke right after to make room for even more people? :D Nice game overall, but a bit easy. Liked the graphics and audio.

The only thing that disturbing my while playing is too fast earth explosion.

@skyrex We will look into it and probably giving more time to explore :v:

I like the style, theme and core mechanic, but i suppose it need more dinamic gameplay with less transport rocket cooldown and faster player ship. Also i couldn't figure out what to do with peoples in the main ship
Ayxs
Ayxsauthor14 Aug 2018, 09:36
@sergem You can transfer people with your main ship by flying over another planet except the Earth. You can pick up people by holding down _Left Control_. Thanks for your feedback!

Congratulations on your first game

The sound was so much fun, but the controls feels a little clunky. I mean, holding LCtrl?

Oh and the intro screen images got cropped on my computer no matter what resolution I played at.

@vekstr Glad you enjoyed it, intro images will be fixed. And this is our third game but the first I published

One question: Why do you package the macOs version in a .rar? Can u please package the macOs version in a .zip? Mac users would have to install third-party software and I don't want to...

good game, bit diffcult

It's pretty weird, but cool weird. Like a clown under a streetlight at night. The music fits all the sweet loving the humans must be doing to populate that quickly.

I like the sounds people make when you get them, reminds of of lovers in a dangerous spacetime

Wow, that's dark... You kind of have to destroy some planets after a while. Made it to 2190. Great audio and graphics although the ship does not fit very well.Yeah, I'm complaining about visual consistency in a game jam game so great job! Loved it!

Wow, guys! This is actually great for the first game. Core gameplay is very intuitive and fun, but a little rebalance could help make the game even more enjoyable.

I love that our games may take place in the same game-verse.

Cheers!

Nice work for your first 2D game! The little humans flying from planet to ship and back are a really nice touch.

I played a few times (trying to get a bit better at it). It felt like I hit a ceiling where I could only just barely keep up with the population growth. I know that was the point (and it fits the theme well). A part of me though wanted to go boldly where no human went before and have humans living on several planets at once (though in this simulation humans are always going to explode themselves sooner rather than later).

I discovered that it's possible to suck humans out of a planet (other than earth). I don't think this is ever useful in the game, but I kind of wish it was. Sucking humans from a planet is a really nice verb, I'd like to be able to use it (and for it to be useful).

I wonder if it's necessary for earth to survive. With all these rad tools (like a interplanetary rocket ship with gravitational human suction), maybe just surviving on any planet would be okay.

I loved the feeling of discovering new planets. (Being a space explorer, and a successful one, is rad). While the game is negative about the human race's chances (which fits with the theme) there's a grand feeling of optimism here in the space travel.

Guess I'm saying I like the mechanics and I like the story they tell. And I think there are some cool possibilities for developing this further.

The music is really awesome and the sound effects are quite funny. The graphics are also really nice. For me it was not really clear when exactly I am able to use the transport action. There seems to be a cool down but an indicator for it is missing. Also, I'm missing a challenge in the game. Sure, you should not let earth explode but the available actions are way too less powerful to really do anything. The transport has a really high cool down and picking them up myself is way too slow and with a too limited capacity. Thus, you feel to not be in power and you don't really feel challenged.

Hi ! This is a lovely submission, I like the concept behind it, it's pretty original and fun to experiment with. It all happened very fast so it took me some time to understand what strategy to adopt, but I found it overall interesting.

Graphics and sound design fit well together, and give off a vibe I haven't seen elsewhere... It's a bizarre take on space, which I appreciate. The sound effects are quite funny :) Congratulations !!
