We set out to create this LD entry using a minimal number of existing tools and frameworks as usual.
The actual game was made using only C++ and SFML, and the graphics were all made using GIMP.

Our take on the theme was to have the backstory incorporate the theme, along with a core gameplay element.
The idea was that the protagonist of the game sets out to save her sibling who has been kidnapped.
This journey is a huge sacrifice on the protagonist's part, her body decaying for every step.
Only by sacrificing enemies and claiming their life force can she combat the decay.

As her body decays, her body mass slowly diminishes, and this allows her to jump higher and reach places that she could usually not.
She has to be careful though, as she also becomes more vulnerable the more her body decays, and as the increased agility is not always a positive thing.

While we started out with a lot of optimism and ambitions, it mostly waned when we realized the core gameplay was not all that fun.
In the end we did not really have the motivation to properly complete the game to our usual level of polish.
We did however make sure there was some kind of end game by adding one of the early design phase sprites (hint: you will realize which one that is once you see it, it's ugly) and having that sprite act as a goal post.
By reaching that point on the map you will be shown a "Congratulations" screen proving that you have completed the game.

Controls

- Move left on A
- Move right on D
- Jump on space bar
- Shoot on left shift or left mouse button

UPDATE: After a good night's sleep and a day at work we gathered enough motivation to push ourselves to fix some of the most critical problems with the gameplay, resulting in a much more entertaining game.
As a bonus, we also added gamepad support. The ugly goal sprite is now replaced with something slightly less ugly, but the end game is still only a simple congratulations screen.

We hope you enjoy playing this updated version of the game :)
