Shooting work by holding the key down, but different astronauts have different firing rates. There is also a cooldown when they have fired too much (they turn grey).
I *think* shooting is limited by hardware. Keyboards usually only have 3 keys held down at once. If you manage to fire more at the same time let me know in the comments!
